Usertick
Recipe feedback survey template

Learn how your recipes turn out, in your readers' kitchens

Four questions at the bottom of each recipe: whether readers made it, how it turned out, whether the times held up and what they changed or swapped. Use it as it is or change any question, and Usertick reads every written answer for you.

What this recipe feedback survey tells you

A recipe feedback survey asks readers what happened when they cooked from your page. This template takes under a minute: whether they made the recipe, a five-star rating of how it turned out, whether the prep and cooking times were accurate, and what they changed or swapped.

It is written to sit inside the page at the bottom of each recipe, under the method, where cooks scroll back after the meal. It shows as soon as the page loads, so it is waiting for readers who come back to it. The same template also runs as a link in your recipe newsletter, a few days after it goes out.

Every written answer is read as it arrives and filed under a category from your list, such as content quality, with a type and a sentiment, so a missing ingredient stands apart from a clever swap. Results shows the share who made the recipe, the star average and the timing split, and the Pages card in the Audience tab shows each recipe's rating.

The 4 questions, one by one

What each question asks, why it is there, what it shows you and what to change.

Question 1 of 4 · Yes / No

Did you make this recipe?

Why ask it
Page views count readers who browsed. A yes or no counts the ones who cooked, and only their rating tells you whether the recipe works.
What you learn
The share that said yes, compared with the period before. Choose Yes to read the ratings and swaps from people who cooked.
Make it yours
Add a skip, If No, the survey ends, so readers who only browsed aren't asked how the dish turned out.
Question 2 of 4 · Stars

How did it turn out?

Why ask it
A rating from home cooks tests the recipe in real kitchens, with their own ovens and the ingredients their store had that day.
What you learn
The star average, a bar per rating and the share who rated 4 or higher. The Pages card shows each recipe page's rating beside the overall score, so a recipe that needs retesting stands out.
Make it yours
Retest the recipes that sit well below your average first, starting with those where cooks also say it took longer.
Question 3 of 4 · Multiple choice

How accurate were the prep and cooking times?

Why ask it
A 20 minute dinner that takes an hour costs you a reader's trust. Asking about the times shows which recipes promise a pace home cooks can't match.
What you learn
A donut with the share for it took longer, about right and it was quicker. Select It took longer to see how those cooks rated the dish and what they changed.
Make it yours
When many cooks say it took longer, check whether the prep time includes the chopping and the preheating.
Question 4 of 4 · Text · Optional

What did you change or swap?

Why ask it
Cooks change recipes to fit what is in the fridge. Their swaps show where the recipe is too strict and which changes worked.
What you learn
Usertick reads each answer as it arrives, gives it a category, a theme and a sentiment, and marks it as an idea, a complaint or a question, so a reported mistake in the ingredients list stands apart from a swap.
Make it yours
Add the swaps that keep coming up as notes on the recipe, such as a dairy-free option.

What the answers show

Results turns each question into numbers you can follow week by week.

How did it turn out?

The average rating and the share who gave 4 or 5 stars, against the period before.

How accurate were the prep and cooking times?

Tips for this survey

Small choices that keep people answering and the answers useful.

  1. 01

    Embed it under every recipe

Place the survey after the method with one CSS selector, so every recipe carries it without editing each page.

  2. 02

    Let readers rate every recipe

Set the show frequency to every visit. With the default, until answered, a reader who rates one recipe doesn't see the survey on the next.

  3. 03

    Fix errors the same day

On every plan, a workflow posts answers marked as bugs or with high urgency to your team's Slack, so a wrong quantity gets fixed quickly.

  4. 04

    Ask in the newsletter too

Put a link survey made from the same template in your recipe newsletter a few days after a recipe goes out, when readers have had time to cook it.
