Usertick
App performance survey template

Find out where the app feels slow, and on which phones

Three quick questions to send after a major release: whether the app drains the battery, which screens feel slow and what kind of phone the user has. Usertick reads every typed Other answer and marks the ones that report a bug.

What this app performance survey tells you

An app performance survey asks users what speed and battery use feel like on their own phones, which lab tests and crash tools can miss. This template takes about 35 seconds: how much the app drains the battery, the screens that feel slow, and the phone they use, grouped by maker and age.

It is written for the week after a major release, sent by email to a list of active users, where the battery question sits inside the email and a tap opens the rest. Send it again by hand after each release, since Usertick has no recurring sends. The survey's link also works from your app's release notes or settings screen.

Results shows a donut for battery drain, bars for each slow screen with every typed Other answer listed, and a donut of phone groups, each against the period before. Select A lot to filter the whole page and see which screens and phones those users report. Usertick reads every typed answer and files it under a category such as speed and reliability.

Send it from Usertick to a contact list, with the first question inside the email. A tap on an answer opens the rest of the survey with that answer already kept. Usertick sends 50 emails a month on the free plan, or connect your own sender.

The 3 questions, one by one

What each question asks, why it is there, what it shows you and what to change.

Question 1 of 3 · Multiple choice

Does the app drain your battery?

Why ask it
Battery drain is a reason people delete an app, and three plain options tell you whether users notice it at all, a little or a lot.
What you learn
A donut shows the share and count of each answer, and over time the shares stack, so a release that drains more shows up as a larger share of A lot.
Make it yours
Keep it first when you send by email, so users can answer inside the message with one tap.
Question 2 of 3 · Multiple choice · Optional

Which screens feel slow?

Why ask it
Slow screens are easier to fix once you know which ones, and users can pick several. None of them lets users with no complaints answer in one tap.
What you learn
Bars show the share and count of each screen, with every typed Other answer listed. Select Camera or uploads to see which phones those users have.
Make it yours
Replace the screens with your app's own, using the names in its tab bar or menu, so users recognize them.
Question 3 of 3 · Dropdown · Optional

Which phone do you use?

Why ask it
Speed problems often belong to older phones, and four groups by maker and age are enough to tell a general slowdown from one that hits older devices.
What you learn
A donut shows the share and count of each phone group. Select one of the older groups to see whether battery drain and slow screens cluster there.
Make it yours
When you share the link from your app's release notes, add the app version as a tag, so each answer keeps it for workflows and Google Sheets beside the phone group.

What the answers show

Results turns each question into numbers you can follow week by week.

Tips for this survey

Small choices that keep people answering and the answers useful.

  1. 01

    Send after every major release

Send the survey a week after each major release, by hand or scheduled up to 30 days ahead. Duplicate the survey for each release, so every version gets its own Results.

  2. 02

    Pick active users

Import users who opened the app in the past month as a contact list. They have used the new version and can compare it with the last one.

  3. 03

    Mind the skip setting

Skip people who already received this survey is on by default. Turn it off, or use a fresh copy, when you send to the same list after the next release.

  4. 04

    Share results with engineering

On every plan, a workflow adds each response to a Google Sheet your engineers can sort by phone group. From Pro, a scheduled PDF report sends the results to the team.

SupportAfter a crashCollect what users were doing when the app closed, so your team can reproduce the crash. Show it the next time the app opens after a crash.
SupportSupport follow-upCheck whether a support conversation actually solved the problem, how much effort it took and how the person who helped did. Send it automatically when a ticket is closed.
SupportHelp article feedbackLearn whether your help articles answer people's questions and which topics are missing or outdated. Add it to the bottom of every help article.

Frequently asked questions

About a week after each major release, when users have had time to use the new version on their own phones.

Active users, as a contact list you import from a CSV. Usertick sends 50 emails a month on Free, 500 on Starter, 2,500 on Pro and 10,000 on Business, or you can connect your own sender.

No. Usertick has no recurring sends or sends triggered by your release, so send it by hand or schedule it up to 30 days ahead when you know the release date.

Select A lot in Results and look at the screens and phone groups those users report. A cluster on one screen or on older phones tells your engineers where to look first.

Yes, by link. Usertick runs on websites and in web apps, so a phone app opens the survey's link, for example from the release notes screen.

Yes. Every template comes with every plan, the free plan included, and the free plan covers 150 responses a month across your surveys.

Yes. The template becomes your own survey, so reword any question, add or remove questions, and change the options and the logic. The gallery stays as it is.
