Sign-up barriers survey template

Find out what stops visitors signing up, with a follow-up for each reason

Six questions for returning visitors on your pricing and signup pages: how likely they are to sign up, what holds them back and one follow-up for each reason, from missing needs to price. Use it as it is or change any question, and Usertick reads every written answer for you.

What this sign-up barriers survey tells you

A sign-up barriers survey asks interested visitors who haven't signed up what is in the way, while they are still on the page. This template takes under a minute: how likely they are to sign up, what is holding them back, and a written follow-up matched to the reason, whether the product may not have what they need, they are still comparing, it looks complicated or the price worries them. It ends with a screen that invites them to try it for free.

It is written for a popup on your pricing and signup pages, shown to returning visitors, a targeting rule on every plan. From Starter, also limit it to visitors who aren't signed in, so customers aren't asked. Exit intent, when the pointer leaves the window, fits this moment.

Usertick reads each follow-up answer, files it under a category from your list, such as pricing and value or features and gaps, and marks it as a question, a complaint or an idea. Results shows the likelihood average, the share of each barrier and how many visitors selected the button on the closing screen.

The 6 questions, one by one

What each question asks, why it is there, what it shows you and what to change.

Question 1 of 6 · Stars

How likely are you to sign up?

Why ask it
Likelihood to sign up sorts visitors into the nearly convinced and the far away, so you can read each group's barriers apart.
What you learn
The average on five stars, a bar per rating and the share who rated 4 or higher. Select the 4 and 5 ratings to see what holds back visitors who are close.
Make it yours
Keep it first: a one-tap rating gets visitors into the survey before they decide to close it.
Question 2 of 6 · Multiple choice

What's holding you back?

Why ask it
Each reason needs a different fix, so the answer sends the visitor to its own follow-up: missing needs to question 3, comparing to question 4, complexity to question 5 and price to question 6.
What you learn
A donut with the share and count of each barrier, with typed Other answers listed, over time as stacked shares.
Make it yours
Other answers go on to question 3 by default, so add a rule that sends Other to the closing screen or give it a follow-up of its own.
Question 3 of 6 · Text · Optional

What do you need that you haven't found?

Why ask it
Visitors who doubt the product has what they need can name the missing piece: a feature, an integration or a use case your pages don't mention.
What you learn
Usertick reads each answer, gives it a theme from your list and a type, so missing features and unclear pages group together.
Make it yours
Set this question to go to the closing screen, since as written every follow-up runs on to the next one.
Question 4 of 6 · Text · Optional

Which other options are you looking at?

Why ask it
The options visitors compare you with are your real competition at the moment of choice.
What you learn
Usertick lists each answer with its sentiment and theme, so you can read which alternatives come up and why.
Make it yours
Write a comparison page for the names that come up most, and set this question to go to the closing screen.
Question 5 of 6 · Text · Optional

What looks complicated?

Why ask it
What looks complicated shows where your pages or your product's first steps put visitors off.
What you learn
Usertick gives each answer a theme, a type and a sentiment, so complaints about setup read apart from questions about how it works.
Make it yours
Answer the top concern with a short video or a setup guide on the page, and set this question to go to the closing screen too.
Question 6 of 6 · Text · Optional

What concerns you about the price?

Why ask it
Price concerns vary: too high, unclear, per seat or no monthly option. The written answer says which one.
What you learn
Usertick files each answer under a category such as pricing and value and gives it a type, so unclear pricing reads apart from a price that feels too high.
Make it yours
If the free plan or trial terms come up, show them on the pricing page and compare the share of price answers with the period before.

Tips for this survey

Small choices that keep people answering and the answers useful.

  1. 01

Route each follow-up to the end

As written, a visitor sent to question 3 also sees questions 4, 5 and 6. Set questions 3, 4 and 5 to go to the closing screen, so each visitor answers only their own follow-up.

  2. 02

    Ask returning visitors only

Target returning visitors with at least two visits on the pricing and signup pages, so first-time readers can look around first.

  3. 03

    Point the button at signup

Link the closing screen's button to your signup page or free trial, so a visitor who just named a barrier can still start.

  4. 04

    Fix the top barrier first

Take the barrier with the largest share, change the page or the offer, and compare its share with the period before.
