Usertick
New subscriber survey template

Write the emails subscribers signed up for, from the first issue

Three questions on the page after signup: what new subscribers hope to get from your emails, how often they want to hear from you and the topic to write about first. Usertick reads every topic suggestion and groups it by theme.

What this new subscriber survey tells you

A new subscriber survey asks people what they want from your emails at the moment they sign up, when they still know exactly why they did. This template asks what they hope to get, from product news to event invitations, how often they would like to hear from you, and what topic you should write about first. All three questions are optional and take under a minute.

It is written for the thank-you page your newsletter form leads to, inside the page under the confirmation message or as a popup on page load. Target that page by its address, or, from Starter or on 1 survey on Free, open the survey on form submit on the signup page itself. The page has to be on your own domain, because the script runs only on its site's verified domain.

Results shows bars for what subscribers hope to get, with typed Other answers listed, a donut of preferred frequency and every topic suggestion with its theme, each against the period before. Each topic is read as it arrives and filed under a theme, so the subjects new readers ask for most rise to the top of your editorial list.

On your website

Show it as a popup, a side button or inside the page, and choose the pages and the moment it opens: on page load, after a delay, on scroll or as someone is about to leave, on every plan. Event and behavior triggers work on 1 survey on Free and on every survey from Starter.

The 3 questions, one by one

What each question asks, why it is there, what it shows you and what to change.

Question 1 of 3 · Multiple choice · Optional

What are you hoping to get from our emails?

Why ask it
People sign up for different reasons: some want offers, some want guides. Knowing the mix tells you what the first issues should lead with.
What you learn
Bars with the share and count of each kind of email, since subscribers can pick several, with typed Other answers listed and stacked shares over time. Choose Offers and discounts to see how often those subscribers want to hear from you.
Make it yours
Match the options to the content you can actually send, and remove Event invitations if you don't host events.
Question 2 of 3 · Dropdown · Optional

How often would you like to hear from us?

Why ask it
Asking at signup lets you set the pace subscribers expect before the first issue arrives, instead of guessing and finding out from unsubscribes.
What you learn
A donut with the share of each frequency, against the period before.
Make it yours
If your email tool supports separate lists, offer the most requested pace as its own list and mention it in your welcome email.
Question 3 of 3 · Text · Optional

What topic should we write about first?

Why ask it
Asking for one topic gets new readers to tell you what they hoped to read, in their own words.
What you learn
Each answer with its sentiment and theme, filterable by theme, with up to 8 themes and their trends.
Make it yours
Write an early issue on the top theme, and say in its opening line that new subscribers asked for it.

Tips for this survey

Small choices that keep people answering and the answers useful.

  1. 01

Put it inside the thank-you page

Embed the survey under the confirmation message, where it shows as soon as the page loads and sits in the page like the rest of the content.

  2. 02

    Keep every question optional

Subscribers who only wanted to sign up can move on, and the ones who answer tell you more. The form they just filled in already asked for their time once.

  3. 03

    Tie answers to the subscriber

Add a Contact question for the email when you want answers per subscriber. A Mailchimp workflow step then writes tags from the answers to that subscriber.

  4. 04

    Plan issues from the themes

Look at the top themes each month and plan the next issues around them, then compare the next period's themes.

Frequently asked questions

On the thank-you page after signup, inside the page under the confirmation. The page has to be on your own domain, so a thank-you page hosted by your email provider can't show it; link to a link copy of the survey from your welcome email instead.

On every plan, a workflow updates the subscriber in Mailchimp with tags and merge fields from the answers when the response carries their email. It never subscribes anyone. Klaviyo gets an event on the profile instead.

Only when you want answers tied to each subscriber in your email tool. Without it, you still see what new subscribers want as a group.

Three or fewer. People on a thank-you page have just filled in a form, so keep the second one short and optional.

Yes. A popup on page load works on the same thank-you page, and from Starter, or on 1 survey on Free, a form submit trigger can open it on the signup page right after the form is sent. Inside the page suits a dedicated thank-you page best, since the questions show without an extra click.

Yes. Every template comes with every plan, the free plan included, and the free plan covers 150 responses a month across your surveys.

Yes. The template becomes your own survey, so reword any question, add or remove questions, and change the options and the logic. The gallery stays as it is.

Yes, from Starter. The template is written in US English. Add languages by hand or with AI translation, and each person sees the survey in their browser's language.
