Usertick
Competitor comparison survey template

Learn how you compare, from customers who switched to you

Three questions for customers about two months in: what they used before, how you compare on ease, speed, value and support, and what the old way still did better. Use it as it is or change any question, and Usertick reads every written answer for you.

What this competitor comparison survey tells you

A competitor comparison survey asks customers who came from another tool, a spreadsheet or an agency how you measure up. This template takes about a minute: what they used before, four statements comparing you on ease of use, speed, value and support, and an open question about what the old way did better.

It is written for an email around a customer's 60th day, after the switch is done and the old way is still fresh in memory. Usertick sends it to a contact list, or you add the link to your own check-in email. It also runs as a popup in your web app, and from Starter you can aim it at a signup date passed with Usertick.identify().

Usertick reads each written answer, files it under a category from your list, such as pricing and value or ease of use, marks it as a complaint, an idea or praise, and gives each response a customer risk reading. Results shows the share of each previous tool and a heat map of the four comparisons with an average per statement.

The 3 questions, one by one

What each question asks, why it is there, what it shows you and what to change.

Question 1 of 3 · Dropdown

What did you use before us?

Why ask it
Where customers came from shapes how they judge you: someone leaving a spreadsheet compares you with free and flexible, someone leaving another product compares features. The answer lets you read the other two questions per group.
What you learn
A donut with the share and count of each previous tool. Choose one, such as Another product, to see the comparison and the written answers from those customers only.
Make it yours
Name your main competitors as options in place of Another product, and keep the option to decline, so nobody is pushed to name a vendor.
Question 2 of 3 · Matrix · Optional

Compared with what you used before, how much do you agree?

Why ask it
Four statements on an agree scale show where you win and where you only hold even, in a few taps. Each one compares you with the customer's own old way, which is the comparison that decides whether they stay.
What you learn
A heat map per statement with its average, against the period before. Select a previous tool in question 1 to see how you compare with that group alone.
Make it yours
Add a rule to question 1 that ends the survey when the answer is Nothing, since those customers have no old way to compare.
Question 3 of 3 · Text · Optional

What did the old way do better?

Why ask it
Switchers still miss something about the old way, such as a shortcut, a report or a price. Those answers are your retention risk and your next improvements.
What you learn
Usertick reads each answer, gives it a theme and a type, and lists the answers filterable by theme, so a missing report that several switchers name shows as one theme.
Make it yours
Send answers that name a missing feature to your product team, and reply to the ones with a high customer risk reading well before renewal.

Tips for this survey

Small choices that keep people answering and the answers useful.

  1. 01

Wait until the switch is done

Send it around day 60, after setup and the first real work. Earlier, customers compare your onboarding with a tool they knew by heart.

  2. 02

    Name the competitors you meet

Replace Another product with the two or three tools you lose deals to, so the comparison reads per competitor.

  3. 03

    Read the losses first

Select the lowest answers on each statement in Results and read what those customers wrote about the old way.

  4. 04

    Use the wins in sales

The statements most switchers agree with are the claims your sales team can make with confidence. Share them with whoever writes your comparison pages.

The comparison is optional, so they can skip it. Add a rule that ends the survey after Nothing if you would rather not ask them what the old way did better.

Yes. Replace Another product with the names of the tools you compete with, and keep a decline option so customers aren't pushed to name one.

Read their answers by theme. A gap several switchers name belongs on the roadmap, and a gap only one names may need a help article that shows how your product already does it.
