Usertick
Discount code survey template

Check that your codes work, and learn where shoppers find them

Four questions for the confirmation page of orders that used a code: whether it worked the first time, where it came from, how clear the discount was at checkout and what shoppers saw when it failed. Use it as it is or change any question, and Usertick reads every written answer for you.

What this discount code survey tells you

A discount code survey asks shoppers who used a code whether it worked and where they found it, two things your order data can't tell you. This template asks four questions in under a minute: a yes or no on whether the code worked the first time, where the code came from, a star rating for how clear the discount was at checkout and an open question for shoppers whose code failed.

It is written for the order confirmation page, inside the page under the order, shown only on orders that used a code. If your store can add a parameter to the confirmation address for those orders, a page rule on the path and query does that on every plan; from Starter, a user trait passed with Usertick.identify() works too. The same survey runs as a link in your order email.

Every written answer and typed Other source is read as it arrives and filed under a category from your list, such as checkout and payment, with a type and an urgency, so a broken code reaches your team the same day. Results shows the share of codes that worked, the share of each source and the clarity rating, each compared with the period before.

The 4 questions, one by one

What each question asks, why it is there, what it shows you and what to change.

Question 1 of 4 · Yes / No

Did your discount code work the first time?

Why ask it
A code that fails the first time costs trust even when the shopper tries again and gets it to work. A yes or no gives you a failure rate to watch after every campaign.
What you learn
Results shows the share that said yes against the period before. Select No to filter the page to failed codes and read what those shoppers saw.
Make it yours
To ask question 4 only after a No, move it to second place and add a skip so a Yes goes straight past it.
Question 2 of 4 · Multiple choice

Where did you get the code?

Why ask it
Knowing where codes come from tells you which campaigns pay for themselves and which codes have leaked to coupon websites. One required answer per order gives every code a source.
What you learn
A donut shows the share and count of each source, with typed Other answers listed, and over time as stacked shares, so a jump in A coupon website after a launch is easy to see.
Make it yours
Name your own channels, such as a podcast or an affiliate, and keep A coupon website so leaked codes have a place to show up.
Question 3 of 4 · Stars

How clear was the discount at checkout?

Why ask it
A discount that doesn't clearly show in the total makes shoppers wonder whether it applied. A rating on clarity tells you whether checkout shows the saving well enough.
What you learn
Results shows the average rating, a bar per rating and the share who rated 4 or higher, against the period before.
Make it yours
Choose the low ratings to see whether those shoppers also said the code failed, which separates a display problem from a broken code.
Question 4 of 4 · Text · Optional

If the code didn't work, what did you see?

Why ask it
Shoppers who saw an error can quote it, such as an expired code, an item the code doesn't cover or a minimum not reached. The exact wording tells your developers or your marketing team where the problem sits.
What you learn
Each answer appears with its sentiment and theme, filterable by theme, with up to 8 themes and their trends, and bug reports are marked as bugs so they are easy to pull out.
Make it yours
On every plan, a workflow can post every answer to this question to the Slack or Microsoft Teams channel your developers watch.

What the answers show

Results turns each question into numbers you can follow week by week.

How clear was the discount at checkout?

The average rating and the share who gave 4 or 5 stars, against the period before.

Where did you get the code?

The share of each answer with its count. Select an answer to narrow the whole page to those people and read what else they said.

Every written answer, read for you

Each answer arrives with its category, theme, type and urgency, so the urgent ones reach your team first.

Tips for this survey

Small choices that keep people answering and the answers useful.

  1. 01

Ask only orders with a code

Limit the survey with a page rule on a parameter your store adds to the confirmation address, or from Starter with a user trait, so shoppers who paid full price aren't asked about codes.

  2. 02

    Check after every campaign

Look at the share of codes that worked in the days after each campaign email. A drop on the day a campaign starts points at a setting in the code itself.

  3. 03

    Watch for leaked codes

When A coupon website grows, the code is spreading beyond its audience. Give the next campaign single-use codes or an end date.

  4. 04

Hear from shoppers who gave up

Shoppers whose code never worked may not reach the confirmation page at all. A cart page survey on exit intent catches them before they leave.

Many of them never reach the confirmation page. Run a short survey on exit intent from the cart page to hear from shoppers who left.
