Purchase intent survey template

See how close visitors are to buying, and what stands in the way

Three quick questions for shoppers a minute into a product or category page: how likely they are to buy today, why they came and what is holding them back. Shoppers ready to buy answer one question and go, and Usertick reads every typed Other answer for you.

What this purchase intent survey tells you

A purchase intent survey asks visitors how close they are to buying while they are still on the page, which turns page views into reasons you can act on. This template asks three questions in about 35 seconds: a 1 to 5 rating for how likely they are to buy today, the main reason for the visit, and what, if anything, is holding them back.

It is written for a popup after a minute on a product or category page, once a visitor has had time to look around. A page rule keeps it to those pages and a delay or time on site opens it, both on every plan. Shoppers who answer Extremely likely skip the rest, so people about to buy are never held up.

Every typed Other answer is read as it arrives and filed under a category from your list, such as shipping and delivery or finding products, with a type and an urgency. Results shows the average likelihood with a bar per rating, the share of each reason for visiting and the share of each barrier, and selecting a reason filters the page to those visitors.

The 3 questions, one by one

What each question asks, why it is there, what it shows you and what to change.

Question 1 of 3 · Stars

How likely are you to buy something from us today?

Why ask it
A 1 to 5 rating sorts visitors from browsing to ready to buy in one tap, and it sets up the next two questions. Shoppers who answer Extremely likely end the survey here and get back to the cart straight away.
What you learn
Results shows the average rating, a bar per rating and the share who rated 4 or higher, against the period before, so a campaign that brings in more ready buyers shows in the bar.
Make it yours
Keep the skip, and add nothing before this question, so visitors close to buying spend one tap on the survey.
Question 2 of 3 · Multiple choice

What's the main reason for your visit today?

Why ask it
Why someone came changes how to read their likelihood. A low rating from a visitor comparing prices means something different from a low rating from one who came to buy something specific.
What you learn
A donut shows the share and count of each reason, with typed Other answers listed. Select To buy something specific to see what is holding those visitors back.
Make it yours
If gifting is rare in your store, swap To look for a gift for a reason that fits, such as To see new arrivals or To check a size chart.
Question 3 of 3 · Multiple choice · Optional

What, if anything, is holding you back from buying today?

Why ask it
The barrier is what you can change: a price, a shipping cost, a delivery time, doubt about the size, too few reviews. Several can apply, and Nothing is there for visitors who are simply not ready.
What you learn
Bars show the share and count of each barrier, with typed Other answers listed, so you can see whether shipping costs or doubt about fit is the bigger reason visitors wait.
Make it yours
Pair the top barrier with a change on the page, such as the shipping cost shown on product pages or a clearer size guide, and compare the shares in the next period.

Tips for this survey

Small choices that keep people answering and the answers useful.

  1. 01

Ask after a minute on the page

A delay or time on site of about a minute reaches visitors who have looked around, and a page rule keeps the survey to product and category pages.

  2. 02

Keep the skip for ready buyers

Shoppers who answer Extremely likely end the survey after one tap. Leave that logic in place so the survey never slows down a sale.

  3. 03

    Read barriers by reason

Select each reason for visiting in turn and compare the barriers. Gift shoppers and price comparers often need different fixes.

  4. 04

    Ask a share of visitors

From Starter, or on 1 survey on Free, show the survey to a share of traffic, such as 20 percent, so you get a steady reading without asking everyone.
