Usertick
First week survey template

Check the first week went right, while there is time to fix it

Three questions for new hires on the Friday of week one: how the week felt, whether the laptop, the welcome, a first task and a helper were in place, and what surprised them. Use it as it is or change any question, and Usertick reads every written answer for you.

What this new hire first week survey tells you

A new hire first week survey asks people at the end of week one whether the basics were ready. This template asks three questions in about a minute: a face for the week, four things that should be in place by Friday, and what surprised them, for better or worse.

It is written for an email Usertick sends on the Friday of week one to the new hire's work address. The face question sits inside the email, so one tap starts the survey. You can also share the link in the onboarding checklist or the team chat, or run it as a conversation, one question at a time.

Every written answer is read as it arrives and filed under a category from your list, such as tools and processes or team and culture, with a type and an urgency. Results shows the faces with their shares and a heat map of what was in place, compared with the period before, so a setup problem shows before the next person starts.

The 3 questions, one by one

What each question asks, why it is there, what it shows you and what to change.

Question 1 of 3 ยท Emoji

How was your first week?

Why ask it
A face for the week is easy to answer for someone still finding their way, and it can be answered inside the email.
What you learn
Each face from Very bad to Very good with its share, against the period before, so you see whether the latest new hires had an easier start.
Make it yours
Keep it first and required, so the email opens on a one-tap answer.
Question 2 of 3 ยท Matrix ยท Optional

Did you have these in place?

Why ask it
Four things decide whether a first week works: a working laptop, a real welcome, a task to start on and someone to ask.
What you learn
A heat map per item with its average, from Not yet to Fully, so a Laptop and accounts row stuck on Not yet shows a setup problem across several new hires.
Make it yours
Change the items to your own checklist, such as a building badge or a payroll form, and keep four or five.
Question 3 of 3 ยท Text ยท Optional

What surprised you most, for better or worse?

Why ask it
Surprises show where the job differs from what the hiring process led people to expect, in both directions.
What you learn
Usertick reads each answer, files it under a category and a theme such as team and culture or tools and processes, marks it as praise, a complaint or a question, and flags the urgent ones.
Make it yours
Share the good surprises with the hiring team and the bad ones with the manager, in the same week.

Tips for this survey

Small choices that keep people answering and the answers useful.

  1. 01

    Schedule it on day one

Usertick doesn't send a survey on its own after a start date. Create the send when the new hire starts and schedule it for Friday afternoon.

  2. 02

Fix a Not yet the same day

When a new hire answers Not yet on the laptop or on someone to ask, give the response an owner in the inbox and sort it out before Monday.

  3. 03

    Ask again at day 30

Follow with a 30-day survey on readiness and what slowed new hires down, so the two together cover the whole first month.

  4. 04

Tell new hires who reads it

Answers sent through Usertick email stay tied to the contact, so say in the email that the people team reads them and will follow up.
