Petition survey template

Learn why people sign, in their own words

Two questions for the page right after a signature: why the issue matters to the signer and how close they are to it. Use it as it is or change any question, and Usertick reads every written answer for you.

What this petition survey tells you

A petition survey asks signers why they signed while the issue is still in front of them. This template takes about 45 seconds: one open question on why the issue matters and one choice on how close the signer is to it, from affected directly to caring in general. The open question comes first, so the reason is written before anything else on the page shapes it.

It is written for the page that confirms the signature, where the survey sits inside the page under the thank-you message, or opens as a popup as the page loads. The website script must run on your own domain, so for a petition hosted on another platform, switch the survey to a link and add it to that platform's thank-you message.

Every reason is read as it arrives, in any language, and filed under a category and a theme from your list, with a type and a sentiment, so the stories worth telling stand out from hundreds of answers. Results lists each reason with up to 8 themes and their trends, and shows the share of signers affected directly, through someone they know or in general.

The 2 questions, one by one

What each question asks, why it is there, what it shows you and what to change.

Question 1 of 2 · Text · Optional

Why does this issue matter to you?

Why ask it
Signers' reasons are the raw material for your campaign: the quote for the press release, the story for the council meeting, the angle your team had not thought of.
What you learn
Results lists each answer with its sentiment and theme, filterable by theme, and shows up to 8 themes with their trends, so the reasons that grow during the campaign are easy to spot. Select a theme to read every reason filed under it, in the signers' own words.
Make it yours
Keep it optional, so a signer in a hurry can still answer the one-tap question that follows.
Question 2 of 2 · Multiple choice

How close are you to this issue?

Why ask it
How close a signer is to the issue changes how their reason reads: a parent whose school is closing and a supporter who cares in general may both write two lines, but they tell different stories. It also shows whether the petition is reaching people beyond those the issue touches directly, which matters when you present it.
What you learn
A donut shows the share and count of each answer. Select It affects me directly to read only those signers' reasons. Over time, the shares show whether the campaign is reaching past the people it affects directly.
Make it yours
Use the share of signers affected directly when you present the petition, as a number your campaign collected itself.

What the answers show

Results turns each question into numbers you can follow week by week.

How close are you to this issue?

The share of each answer with its count. Select an answer to narrow the whole page to those people and read what else they said.

Every written answer, read for you

Each answer arrives with its category, theme, type and urgency, so the urgent ones reach your team first.

Tips for this survey

Small choices that keep people answering and the answers useful.

  1. 01

Ask permission to stay in touch

The template doesn't ask for contact details yet. Add a Consent question that asks to send campaign updates, and a Contact question for the signers who agree. Results then shows how many of the signers who saw the box ticked it.

  2. 02

    Ask before you quote

Add a yes or no question such as Can the campaign quote your answer?, and quote only the signers who said yes.

  3. 03

    Target the confirmation page

Set the survey's pages to the confirmation page only, so it never opens before someone has signed.

  4. 04

    Ask each signer once

Keep the show frequency at until answered, so a supporter who comes back to share the petition isn't asked again.

Frequently asked questions

On the page right after the signature, inside the page under the thank-you message. It shows as soon as the page loads, so signers see it before they close the tab.

Not as it is. Add a Consent question about campaign updates and a Contact question at the end; each contact answer also becomes a contact you can send a later survey to. Keep the Contact question optional, so signers who only want to sign are not held up.

Ask first. Add a yes or no question about quoting the answer, and use only the reasons from signers who said yes.

Two or three. Signers came to sign, so this template asks one open question and one tap, about 45 seconds in all. If you add a Consent and a Contact question, keep the open question optional so the survey stays short.

Yes. Choose a popup or a side button in place of inside the page, with page load as the trigger and the confirmation page as the target.
