Usertick
Notification preferences survey template

Send fewer notifications, and only the ones people want

Three tap-only questions for active users: whether you send too many, which notifications they find useful and where they want to get them. Add one open question and Usertick reads every written answer for you.

What this notification survey tells you

A notification preferences survey asks active users whether your emails and alerts help them or bury them. This template is three questions and about 30 seconds, all taps: the volume, the notifications worth keeping and the place each user wants to get them. The answers tell you which notifications to keep on by default, which to fold into a summary and which to move to another channel.

It is written for email. Usertick sends it to a contact list, and the first question sits inside the message, so one tap on Too many opens the rest of the survey with that answer kept. Send it to active users once a year, now or scheduled up to 30 days ahead, or share the link at the bottom of your own notification emails.

Results shows the share for each answer against the period before, and selecting Too many narrows the page to those users, so you see which notifications they still value and where they want them. When you add an open question, Usertick reads each answer and files it under a theme with a type and a sentiment.

In an email

Send it from Usertick to a contact list, with the first question inside the email. A tap on an answer opens the rest of the survey with that answer already kept. Usertick sends 50 emails a month on the free plan, or connect your own sender.

The 3 questions, one by one

What each question asks, why it is there, what it shows you and what to change.

Question 1 of 3 · Multiple choice

How many notifications do you get from us?

Why ask it
Volume is the first thing to fix: users who get too many start ignoring all of them, including the ones that matter. Three plain options make it a one-tap answer inside the email.
What you learn
A donut with the share and count of Too many, About right and Too few, and the shares over time. Select Too many to filter every other card to those users.
Make it yours
Keep it first, so a tap inside the email opens the survey with that answer already kept.
Question 2 of 3 · Multiple choice · Optional

Which ones are useful to you?

Why ask it
The notifications users would keep are the ones to protect when you cut the rest. Allowing several answers shows the full set each user relies on.
What you learn
Bars with the share and count of each notification. Compare the bars for users who said Too many with those who said About right to see which notifications survive a cut, and watch them over time after you change the defaults.
Make it yours
List the notifications your product actually sends, with the names from your settings page, and add an Other option for the rest.
Question 3 of 3 · Multiple choice

Where would you like to get them?

Why ask it
Some users want everything by email, others only inside the product or in a chat tool. The answer tells you which channels deserve their own settings.
What you learn
A donut with the share of each place, over time as stacked shares. Select Slack or Microsoft Teams to see which notifications those users find useful.
Make it yours
Allow several answers if your users mix channels, and remove any place your product can't deliver to yet.

Tips for this survey

Small choices that keep people answering and the answers useful.

  1. 01

Send it to active users only

Build the contact list from users who logged in during the last month and import it as a CSV, so the answers come from people who still receive the notifications.

  2. 02

    Add one open question

The template is all taps. Add an optional text question that asks which notification they would turn off first, and Usertick reads each answer and gives it a theme.

  3. 03

Change the defaults, then say so

Turn off or bundle the notifications most users find noisy, and tell users in your next product update what changed because of their answers.

  4. 04

Repeat it each year by hand

Usertick doesn't resend a survey on a schedule. Send it again each year with Skip people who already received this survey turned off, and compare the share of Too many with the year before.
