Usertick
Welcome survey template

Know who just signed up, and what they came to do

Four tap questions right after signup: the person's role, the size of their company, what brought them and where they first heard about you. Add one open question and Usertick reads every written answer for you.

What this welcome survey tells you

A welcome survey asks new users who they are and what they came to do, before they start using the product. This template is four taps and about 40 seconds: their role, the size of their company, the job that brought them, and where they first heard about you, so you can tailor onboarding and see which channels bring the right people.

It is written for the first screen after signup in your web app, as a popup that opens when the page loads. Target that page, such as your welcome or getting started route, and leave the show frequency on until answered so each person sees it once. The same survey can also go out as a link in your welcome email.

Results shows the share of each role, company size, goal and source, with every typed Other answer listed, against the period before. Select one source, such as A podcast or article, to see which roles and company sizes it brings, and send the answers on to your own tools to shape onboarding for each group.

The 4 questions, one by one

What each question asks, why it is there, what it shows you and what to change.

Question 1 of 4 · Dropdown

What's your role?

Why ask it
A founder, an engineer and a support lead want different first steps. The role is the simplest way to send each person to the right one.
What you learn
A donut with the share and count of each role, with typed Other answers listed, and the shares over time. Select Engineering to see which sources bring developers.
Make it yours
Use the roles your sales team sells to, and keep the list short enough to read at a glance.
Question 2 of 4 · Multiple choice

How many people work at your company?

Why ask it
Company size tells you whether a signup is a solo user or a team that may need several seats and a sales conversation.
What you learn
A donut with the share of each size band, over time as stacked shares. Select 201 to 1,000 to see what larger companies came to do.
Make it yours
On every plan, send the size to HubSpot with a workflow, so larger signups reach your sales team the same day.
Question 3 of 4 · Multiple choice

What brings you here today?

Why ask it
The job that brought someone is the promise your onboarding has to keep first. Someone replacing a tool and someone exploring need very different first screens.
What you learn
A donut with the share and count of each goal, with typed Other answers listed. Select Replace a tool I use today to see those users' roles and company sizes.
Make it yours
Write the goals as the jobs your product does, and change the first screen or checklist for the top two.
Question 4 of 4 · Multiple choice

How did you first hear about us?

Why ask it
Analytics records the last click before signup. The person can tell you about the friend, the podcast or the article that came first.
What you learn
A donut with the share of each source over time, with typed Other answers listed beside it, so word of mouth gets a number of its own.
Make it yours
Add the names people know, such as your podcast or a community you post in, as options.

Tips for this survey

Small choices that keep people answering and the answers useful.

  1. 01

    Ask before the tour starts

Open the survey on the first screen after signup, so the answers can change what each person sees next.

  2. 02

Pass answers to your onboarding tools

On every plan, a workflow sends each response to Intercom, Segment or HubSpot, where your onboarding emails and checklists can use it. A webhook can also send it to your own code.

  3. 03

    Keep it to taps

Every question here is a single tap. Add an open question only if someone will read the answers, since each one adds time to the first minute in the product.

  4. 04

    Compare sources by role

Select a source in Results and look at the roles and company sizes it brings, so you spend on the channels that bring the people you sell to.
