Usertick
Trial check-in survey template

Catch stuck trial users, while the trial still has days left

Three questions on the third day of the trial: whether users have tried what they signed up for, what is getting in the way and what they came to test. Use it as it is or change any question, and Usertick reads every written answer for you.

What this trial check-in survey tells you

A trial check-in survey asks trial users early whether they have reached what they came for. This template asks three questions in under a minute: whether they have been able to try what they signed up for, what is getting in the way, and what they signed up to test. The answers tell you who needs help while there is still time to give it.

It is written for a popup in your web app on the third day of the trial, shown from Starter to trial users with the day of their trial passed through Usertick.identify(). Stuck users still have most of the trial left, so a reply from your team can still change how it ends.

Results shows the share who have tried what they came for and the share of each obstacle, against the period before. Every written answer is read as it arrives and filed under a category such as getting started or features and gaps, with a theme, so you see what trial users came to test.

The 3 questions, one by one

What each question asks, why it is there, what it shows you and what to change.

Question 1 of 3 · Yes / No

Have you been able to try what you signed up for?

Why ask it
One question sorts trial users into those on track and those who need help, while most of the trial is still ahead.
What you learn
The share that said yes, compared with the period before. Select No to see what is getting in the way of those users.
Make it yours
If you want users on track to skip the obstacles, add a rule so a Yes goes straight to question 3.
Question 2 of 3 · Multiple choice · Optional

What's getting in the way?

Why ask it
The options name obstacles you solve in different ways: time, setup, missing data, a colleague and not knowing where to start. Users can pick several.
What you learn
Bars with the share and count of each obstacle, with typed Other answers listed, compared with the period before. Select an obstacle to read what those users came to test.
Make it yours
Prepare one reply for each obstacle, such as sample data or a setup guide, so your team can answer the same day.
Question 3 of 3 · Text · Optional

What did you sign up to test?

Why ask it
What users came to test tells you which part of the product to show them, and which use cases bring trials in. Users who are on track and users who are stuck both answer it.
What you learn
Usertick reads each answer and files it under a category and a theme from your list. Results groups the answers by theme, with up to 8 themes and their trends.
Make it yours
Use the themes to send each trial user a guide for the job they came to do.

Tips for this survey

Small choices that keep people answering and the answers useful.

  1. 01

    Show it on day three

From Starter, pass the day of the trial as a trait with Usertick.identify() and show the survey when it is 3 or more, so it opens on the right day for each user.

  2. 02

Reach stuck users the same day

On every plan, a workflow posts every No to a Slack or Microsoft Teams channel with the obstacle, so someone on your team can reach out while the trial is young.

  3. 03

    Know who is stuck

Include the user's email in the identify call, so each response in the inbox shows who answered and someone can own the follow-up.

  4. 04

    Ask once per trial

Keep the show frequency on until answered, so trial users answer once and the survey stays away after that.

Yes. Each week, send it to a list of users who started their trial a few days before. Usertick doesn't send on each user's own day, so the list sets the timing, and the first question is a Yes / No that users answer inside the email.
