Usertick
Community feedback survey template

See how welcome members feel, and what would bring them back

Four questions for active members: how they would describe the community, how often their questions get a useful answer, what they come for and what is missing. Usertick reads every written answer and groups it by theme.

What this community feedback survey tells you

A community feedback survey asks members how your forum or community space works for them. This template asks how they would describe the community, on faces from unwelcoming to very welcoming, how often their questions get a useful answer, what they come for, from answers to sharing their work, and what is missing. It takes about a minute.

It is written for an email to active members twice a year. Import members as contacts from a CSV, send now or schedule the send up to 30 days ahead, and the faces of the first question sit inside the email. A link copy pinned in a community announcement reaches the regulars who skip email.

Results shows the share of each face, a donut of how often questions get useful answers, bars for what members come for, and each written answer with its theme and sentiment, each against the period before. Select Rarely to see what the members who struggle to get answers say is missing. Usertick also marks each written answer as an idea, a complaint, a question, a bug or praise.

The 4 questions, one by one

What each question asks, why it is there, what it shows you and what to change.

Question 1 of 4 ยท Emoji

How would you describe the community?

Why ask it
How welcome members feel decides whether they post again. Five faces make it quick to answer and easy to compare from round to round.
What you learn
Faces from very bad to very good, each with its share, against the period before.
Make it yours
Compare new and long-time members by sending each group its own copy of the survey.
Question 2 of 4 ยท Multiple choice

How often do your questions get a useful answer?

Why ask it
A community lives on answered questions. This one measures it from the member's side, with an option for members who only read.
What you learn
A donut with the share of each answer, against the period before. Select Rarely or Sometimes to see what those members come for and what they say is missing.
Make it yours
When the share of Rarely grows, look at unanswered threads by topic and recruit members who can answer them.
Question 3 of 4 ยท Multiple choice ยท Optional

What do you come to the community for?

Why ask it
Members come for different things, and the mix tells you what to give room to: help threads, announcements, introductions or a place to share work.
What you learn
Bars with the share and count of each reason, since members can pick several, with typed Other answers listed. Select Answers to questions to see how often those members get one.
Make it yours
Rename the options to match your spaces, such as channels or categories, so the answers map to where members go.
Question 4 of 4 ยท Text ยท Optional

What's missing from the community?

Why ask it
An open question at the end collects the requests the options can't, such as events, a search that works or more replies from your own team.
What you learn
Each answer with its sentiment and theme, filterable by theme, with up to 8 themes and their trends.
Make it yours
Keep it optional, and share the top themes back with the community in a post.

Tips for this survey

Small choices that keep people answering and the answers useful.

  1. 01

    Ask active members

Send it to members who posted or read in the last few months, so the answers describe the community as it is now. Import them from your forum's member export as a CSV, up to 2,000 rows at a time.

  2. 02

    Pin a link between rounds

Post a link copy of the survey in a pinned thread, so members who skip email can answer too.

  3. 03

    Share what you heard

Post a short summary of the answers and the changes you will make, with dates where you can, so members see that the survey led somewhere.

  4. 04

    Watch the unanswered share

Track the share of Rarely from round to round. A rising share means members need more help from experts or from your team.
