Exit intent survey template

Hear why visitors leave, before they close the tab

Two questions for the moment a visitor heads for the exit: the main reason they are leaving, and what they hoped to find on the page. Usertick reads every written answer and groups what visitors were missing.

What this exit intent survey tells you

An exit intent survey opens when a visitor is about to leave and asks why. This template offers five common reasons, from just browsing to comparing other options, plus a write-in Other, and then asks what the visitor hoped to find on the page. It takes about 40 seconds, and the first answer is one tap.

It is written for a website popup on the pages where visitors decide, such as pricing, a product page or the sign-up page. Exit intent opens it on a desktop when the pointer leaves through the top of the window, and on a phone after a fast scroll back to the top. Set the visitor type to new to hear from people who haven't decided yet.

Results shows the share of each reason in a donut, with every typed Other answer listed and the shares compared with the period before. Each written answer is read as it arrives and filed under a category such as pricing and value or features and gaps, with a theme and a type, so a detail many visitors look for and can't find stands out.

The 2 questions, one by one

What each question asks, why it is there, what it shows you and what to change.

Question 1 of 2 · Multiple choice

What's the main reason you're leaving today?

Why ask it
A leaving visitor will give one reason in one tap. The options separate the visitors you can still win, such as those who need more information or find the price too high, from those who were only browsing.
What you learn
A donut with the share and count of each reason, the typed Other answers listed beside it, and stacked shares over time. Select The price is too high to read only what those visitors hoped to find.
Make it yours
Rewrite the options in your visitors' words, and add the reason your sales or support team hears most, such as a missing integration or a delivery area you don't cover.
Question 2 of 2 · Text · Optional

What were you hoping to find on this page?

Why ask it
The page they leave tells you where they were, and this answer tells you what the page failed to give them: a price, a size chart, a feature, a phone number. Each missing detail is a change you can make to that page.
What you learn
Each answer with its sentiment and theme, filterable by theme, with up to 8 themes and their trends, so the details most visitors miss rise to the top.
Make it yours
Keep it optional, so a visitor in a hurry can send the reason alone, and add a placeholder such as A price, a size, a feature.

What the answers show

Results turns each question into numbers you can follow week by week.

What's the main reason you're leaving today?

The share of each answer with its count. Select an answer to narrow the whole page to those people and read what else they said.

Every written answer, read for you

Each answer arrives with its category, theme, type and urgency, so the urgent ones reach your team first.

Tips for this survey

Small choices that keep people answering and the answers useful.

  1. 01

    Show it where visitors decide

Include your pricing, product and sign-up pages by their address, such as /pricing, and leave out pages such as blog posts, where leaving is the normal end of a visit.

  2. 02

    Ask each visitor once

Set the show frequency to Once, or add a wait after closing, so a visitor who closes the survey isn't asked again on the next visit.

  3. 03

    Start with new visitors

Set the visitor type to new. Returning visitors leave for other reasons, such as having already bought, and can get a survey of their own with options written for them.

  4. 04

    Fix the top reason first

Each month, take the reason with the largest share, change the page it comes from, and compare its share with the period before in Results.

Frequently asked questions

Phones have no pointer, so exit intent opens the survey after a fast scroll back to the top of the page. On a desktop it opens when the pointer leaves through the top of the window.

It opens only once a visitor is already leaving, and the first answer is one tap. Show it on your key pages, and set it to show once per visitor or to wait a number of days after a close.

The pages where a visitor makes up their mind: pricing, product pages, the sign-up page and the cart. Pages where leaving is the normal end of a visit only add noise.
