Language class survey template

Check every learner is in the right level, and speaking enough

Four quick questions for a language class: satisfaction so far, whether the level is right, how much of the class time learners spend speaking and how confident they feel outside class. Use it as it is or add an open question, and Usertick reads every written answer for you.

What this language class survey tells you

A language class feedback survey asks learners whether the class is working for them while there is time to move them up, down or into more conversation. This template takes about 35 seconds: satisfaction so far, the level, the share of class time spent speaking on a slider, and confidence using the language outside class on a 1 to 10 scale.

It is written for an email to each class every four weeks, sent to the class's contact list, for language schools and adult courses. The same template runs as a link in the class chat, as a QR code on the classroom wall, or as a conversation that asks one question at a time.

Results shows the satisfaction rating and the share who rated it 4 or higher, the split on level, the median share of speaking time with the middle half of answers, and average confidence with a column per step, each against the period before. Add an open question, and Usertick reads every written answer and files it under a category with a type and a sentiment.

The 4 questions, one by one

What each question asks, why it is there, what it shows you and what to change.

Question 1 of 4 · Stars

How satisfied are you with your class so far?

Why ask it
A rating every four weeks shows a class going off track before learners stop coming.
What you learn
The average out of 5, a bar per rating and the share who rated the class 4 or higher, against the period before.
Make it yours
Keep it first. In the email, learners tap a star inside the message and the rest of the survey opens with that rating kept.
Question 2 of 4 · Multiple choice

The level of the class is

Why ask it
The wrong level is one of the easiest problems to fix in a language course: a learner who is bored or lost can move to another group.
What you learn
A donut with the share and count for too easy, about right and too hard. Select Too hard to filter the page to those learners.
Make it yours
Send it by email, so each answer is tied to the learner's contact and you know who to offer a level change.
Question 3 of 4 · Slider · Optional

How much of the class time do you spend speaking?

Why ask it
Speaking practice is hard to find outside class, and in class it can shrink behind grammar and written exercises.
What you learn
The median and the middle half of answers, so you see how much speaking a typical learner gets and how much it varies across the class.
Make it yours
When the median is low, build pair or group speaking into every lesson and check the slider again in four weeks.
Question 4 of 4 · Big scale

How confident do you feel using the language outside class?

Why ask it
Confidence outside class is the outcome learners care about: ordering food, a work call, a chat with a neighbor. It shows whether the class carries over to daily life.
What you learn
The average and a column per step from not confident to very confident, so progress from one four-week check to the next shows.
Make it yours
Read it with the speaking slider, and look first at learners who score low on both.

Tips for this survey

Small choices that keep people answering and the answers useful.

  1. 01

    Send each check by hand

Usertick doesn't send recurring surveys, so schedule each send ahead and use Send again for the same class, with Skip people who already received this survey turned off.

  2. 02

    Use one survey per class

A copy for each class keeps their results apart, since Results doesn't split answers by a link tag.

  3. 03

Act on level answers within a week

Offer a learner who says Too hard or Too easy a trial lesson in another group before the next check.

  4. 04

Add an open question when needed

A last question such as What would you like to practice next? gives Usertick written answers to read and sort by theme.
