Usertick
Feature adoption survey template

See which features people use, and which ones they never found

Three questions for users a few months in: how often they use each main feature, the one they wish they had found sooner and how they found it in the end. Use it as it is or change any question, and Usertick reads every written answer for you.

What this feature adoption survey tells you

A feature adoption survey asks users how often they use each part of your product and what they missed. This template takes about a minute: a grid that rates five features from never to always, the one feature they wish they had found sooner, and an open question about how they found it in the end.

It is written for an email to users in their third month, when habits have settled but the early weeks are still easy to recall. Usertick sends it to a contact list, or you share the link in your own product newsletter. It also runs as a popup in your web app, aimed at signed-in users by a signup date passed with Usertick.identify() from Starter.

Usertick reads each written answer, files it under a category from your list, such as getting started or features and gaps, and marks it as praise, an idea or a complaint. Results draws the grid as a heat map with an average per feature, and shows the share of each late discovery.

The 3 questions, one by one

What each question asks, why it is there, what it shows you and what to change.

Question 1 of 3 · Matrix · Optional

How often do you use each of these?

Why ask it
Product analytics count clicks in tracked sessions. A frequency grid adds each user's own view of every main feature at once, including the ones your tracking misses, and a row answered Never points to a feature people skip or never found.
What you learn
A heat map with one row per feature and an average for each, against the period before, so a feature that sits at Never or Rarely for most users stands out. Select an answer, such as Never for Automations, to read what those users wrote.
Make it yours
Replace the five rows with your own main features, named the way they appear in your product's menu.
Question 2 of 3 · Multiple choice

Which one do you wish you had found sooner?

Why ask it
The feature people wish they had found sooner is the one your onboarding should show earlier. Asking for one forces a pick, so the answers rank your discovery gaps.
What you learn
A donut with the share and count of each feature. Select a feature to see how often those users use it now and how they found it.
Make it yours
Add a rule that ends the survey when someone picks None of them, so they aren't asked how they found it.
Question 3 of 3 · Text · Optional

How did you find it in the end?

Why ask it
How people found the feature in the end shows which paths work: a teammate, a help article, a release email or an accident.
What you learn
Usertick reads each answer, gives it a theme from your list and a sentiment, and lists the answers filterable by theme, so paths such as a teammate's tip or a help article group together.
Make it yours
Use the path that comes up most in your onboarding: if a help article did the work, link it from the screen where new users first meet that feature.

What the answers show

Results turns each question into numbers you can follow week by week.

Which one do you wish you had found sooner?

The share of each answer with its count. Select an answer to narrow the whole page to those people and read what else they said.

How often do you use each of these?

Each row's answers side by side, so the part that needs work stands out.

Every written answer, read for you

Each answer arrives with its category, theme, type and urgency, so the urgent ones reach your team first.

Tips for this survey

Small choices that keep people answering and the answers useful.

  1. 01

Ask after the first three months

Send it to users who signed up about three months ago. Add them to a contact list from a CSV, or target signed-in users by a signup date trait from Starter.

  2. 02

    Use your own feature names

Name each row as it reads in your menu, so users recognize it. A feature they don't recognize by name reads as Never even when they use it.

  3. 03

    Show the missed feature earlier

Put the top answer to question 2 in front of new users in their first week, then send the survey to the next group to see whether the pick changes.

  4. 04

    Keep the grid short

Five rows answer in a few seconds. Swap rows between sends instead of adding more, so each user rates a short list.
