Find out if visitors get things done, and what gets in their way

Four questions while visitors are on your site: why they came, whether they managed it, how easy it was to find their way around and what got in the way. Usertick reads every written answer and groups the obstacles by theme.

What this website usability survey tells you

A website usability survey asks visitors whether your site let them do what they came for. This template asks the main reason for the visit, whether they were able to do it, how easy it was to find their way around on a 1 to 7 scale, and what, if anything, got in their way. It takes under a minute and needs no sign-in.

It is written for a website popup shown after a minute on the site, once visitors have tried to do something, or on exit intent, when they are about to leave. Time on site counts focused time across the pages of one visit. Exit intent opens the survey when the pointer leaves the window or, on a phone, after a fast scroll back to the top.

Results shows the share of each reason for the visit, the share who did what they came to do, and the average ease with a hard-to-easy bar, each against the period before. Select No to see why those visitors came and what got in their way. Every written answer is read and filed under a category and a theme, so a missing link or a hidden page shows up as a pattern.

The 4 questions, one by one

What each question asks, why it is there, what it shows you and what to change.

Question 1 of 4 · Multiple choice

What's the main reason for your visit today?

Why ask it
The reason for the visit gives every later answer its context. A visitor who came to buy and one who came for support judge the site by different tasks.
What you learn
A donut with the share and count of each reason, the typed Other answers listed, and stacked shares over time. Select a reason to see whether those visitors managed it.
Make it yours
Rewrite the reasons to match your site, such as To book a table or To check an order, and keep five or six.
Question 2 of 4 · Yes / No

Were you able to do what you came to do?

Why ask it
Task success is the plainest usability measure. A yes or no, asked right after the reason, says whether the site worked for that visit.
What you learn
The share that said yes, against the period before. Select No to see the reasons and obstacles of the visitors who didn't manage.
Make it yours
Select each reason in question 1 and compare the yes share, so you know which kind of visit fails most often.
Question 3 of 4 · Customer effort

How easy was it to find your way around the site?

Why ask it
Finding the way covers menus, search and links, the parts of a site visitors use on every visit. The effort scale shows how hard it was, even for visitors who got there in the end.
What you learn
The average on the 1 to 7 scale and the share who found it easy, with a hard-to-easy bar, against the period before.
Make it yours
Run one copy for phones and one for desktops, targeted by device, so a menu that fails on small screens stands out.
Question 4 of 4 · Text · Optional

What, if anything, got in your way?

Why ask it
Visitors can name the obstacle in a few words: a menu item they couldn't find, a slow page, a form that wouldn't submit.
What you learn
Each answer with its sentiment and theme, filterable by theme, with up to 8 themes and their trends. Usertick marks bugs and flags urgent ones, such as a broken checkout.
Make it yours
Keep it optional, and send the answers marked as bugs to your web team with a workflow.

What the answers show

Results turns each question into numbers you can follow week by week.

How easy was it to find your way around the site?

What's the main reason for your visit today?

Tips for this survey

Small choices that keep people answering and the answers useful.

  1. 01

    Wait until visitors have tried

A trigger after a minute on the site gives visitors time to attempt their task before you ask whether it worked.

  2. 02

    Ask each visitor once

Keep the default, Until answered, or add a wait after closing, so returning visitors aren't asked on every visit.

  3. 03

    Stay off the last step

Exclude checkout and form pages, so the survey never opens over a visitor who is about to finish a task.

  4. 04

    Measure each redesign

Run the survey before and after a change to your menus or pages, and compare the yes share with the period before.

Frequently asked questions

After a visitor has had time to try something, such as a minute on the site, or when they are about to leave. On page load nobody has tried anything yet, so the answers tell you little.

Show it across the site, but exclude pages where a popup would interrupt a task, such as checkout or a sign-up form.

A feedback button waits for visitors who have something to say. This survey asks visitors at a moment you choose, so it also hears from people who would never open a feedback form.
