Usertick
Language preference survey template

Learn which language to add next, and where the translation slips

Three questions for your website: which language visitors would rather use, how good the current translation reads and where the wording feels wrong. Use it as it is or change any question, and Usertick reads every written answer, in any language.

What this language preference survey tells you

A language preference survey asks visitors which language they would rather read your site in and how well the current translation works. This template takes under a minute: a dropdown of languages with a write-in Other, a score for the translation people see today, and an open question about the wording that feels wrong.

It is written for a popup on the pages people read most, such as the home page, pricing or the help center. Target it by visitor country to reach the markets where you have no translation yet, and run it the same way in your web app for signed-in users.

Usertick reads each written answer in the language it was written in, files it under a category from your list and gives it a type, such as a complaint about a wrong term or an idea for a new language. Results shows the share of each language, with the typed Other answers listed, and the translation score against the period before.

The 3 questions, one by one

What each question asks, why it is there, what it shows you and what to change.

Question 1 of 3 · Dropdown

Which language would you prefer to use?

Why ask it
Analytics shows where visitors come from, which isn't the same as the language they would choose. One country can speak several languages, and a visitor who reads your site well enough to stay may still prefer another.
What you learn
A donut with the share and count of each language, with every typed Other answer listed below it, so a language you didn't list still gets counted. Over time it shows as stacked shares.
Make it yours
List the languages you are thinking of adding next to the ones you already offer, and keep Other for the rest.
Question 2 of 3 · Stars

How would you rate the translation you see today?

Why ask it
A score for the translation people see today tells you whether to fix what you have before you add more. Visitors who read the original language rate the source text, which gives you a baseline.
What you learn
The average on the five-star scale, a bar per rating and the share who rated 4 or higher. Select a language in question 1 to see how the people who chose it rate what they read.
Make it yours
Compare the score after each translation update, using the period before shown on the card.
Question 3 of 3 · Text · Optional

Where does the wording feel wrong?

Why ask it
Weak translation shows in specific places: a button label cut short, a term your industry never uses, a formal tone where your brand is casual. The open question gets the exact words.
What you learn
Usertick reads each answer in whatever language it was written, gives it a theme and a sentiment, and lists it with the rest, filterable by theme, so wording problems on one page group together.
Make it yours
Set the placeholder to Paste the words and the page, so your translators can find the line.

What the answers show

Results turns each question into numbers you can follow week by week.

How would you rate the translation you see today?

The average rating and the share who gave 4 or 5 stars, against the period before.

Which language would you prefer to use?

The share of each answer with its count. Select an answer to narrow the whole page to those people and read what else they said.

Every written answer, read for you

Each answer arrives with its category, theme, type and urgency, so the urgent ones reach your team first.

Tips for this survey

Small choices that keep people answering and the answers useful.

  1. 01

Target the countries you don't serve

Usertick doesn't target by browser language, so target the countries where your site has no translation. From Starter, or on 1 survey on Free, add a share of traffic to ask a sample.

  2. 02

    Translate the survey itself

From Starter a survey can carry more than one language, by hand or with AI translation, and each visitor sees their browser's language when the survey has it.

  3. 03

Read the answers before you translate

Typed Other answers and the wording complaints show which languages and which pages matter most. Start with the pages where the complaints cluster.

  4. 04

    Ask each visitor once

Leave the frequency on until answered, so each visitor sees the survey until they reply and is then left alone.
