Usertick
Learning budget survey template

See how your learning budget gets used, halfway through the year

Four questions on the learning budget: how much people have used, what they spent it on, what gets in the way and what they want to learn next. Use it as it is or change any question, and Usertick reads every written answer for you.

What this learning budget survey tells you

A learning budget survey asks employees how they use the money set aside for their development and what stops them from using more. This template asks four questions in about 70 seconds: a slider for the share of the budget used, what it went on, what gets in the way and what they want to learn next.

It is written for midyear, as a popup on the learning page of your intranet when the Usertick script runs there, or as an email Usertick sends to everyone with a budget. Midyear leaves six months to act on what gets in the way. The link also works in your team chat, and the survey can run as a conversation, one question at a time.

Every written answer is read as it arrives and filed under a category from your list, such as growth and learning, with a type and an urgency. Results shows the median share of the budget used with the middle half of the answers, and bars for spending and obstacles, each compared with the period before.

The 4 questions, one by one

What each question asks, why it is there, what it shows you and what to change.

Question 1 of 4 · Slider · Optional

How much of this year's learning budget have you used?

Why ask it
A slider from None to All of it is quicker than looking up an amount, and the share used is what you need to plan the rest of the year.
What you learn
The median and the middle half of the answers, so you see whether most people sit near zero or a few people use it all.
Make it yours
Keep it optional, since some people won't know their exact balance, and add the budget amount to the question text if it is the same for everyone.
Question 2 of 4 · Multiple choice · Optional

What did you spend it on?

Why ask it
What people buy shows which kinds of learning they value, and Nothing yet gives people who haven't started an honest answer.
What you learn
Bars with the share and count of each kind of spending, with typed Other answers listed.
Make it yours
Add the options your policy covers, such as language lessons or a part-time degree.
Question 3 of 4 · Multiple choice · Optional

What gets in the way of using it?

Why ask it
Unused budget has a cause, and some causes are the company's to fix, such as time or the approval steps.
What you learn
Bars with the share and count of each obstacle. Select The approval process to see how much of their budget those people used.
Make it yours
If Not enough time leads, agree on learning hours with managers. If Not knowing what to choose leads, share a short list of recommended courses.
Question 4 of 4 · Text · Optional

What would you like to learn next?

Why ask it
The next topic, in people's own words, tells you what to recommend and which group courses to buy.
What you learn
Usertick reads each answer, files it under a category and a theme such as growth and learning or tools and processes, and marks requests as ideas. Results groups them into up to 8 themes with their trends.
Make it yours
When several people name the same topic, buy a group course for them instead of single seats.

Tips for this survey

Small choices that keep people answering and the answers useful.

  1. 01

    Ask at midyear

Halfway through the year, people still have time to use the budget, and you can still change the rules before it resets.

  2. 02

Send people to the next step

Set Redirect after submit to your learning budget page, so people land there 2.5 seconds after the thank-you screen and can start a request.

  3. 03

    Share the top topics

Post the most requested topics with a course or a book for each, which helps the people who chose Not knowing what to choose.

  4. 04

    Ask again before the reset

Ask the slider question again near the end of the year and compare the median with midyear.
