Usertick
News app feedback survey template

See how reading in your app feels, one feature at a time

Three questions for regular readers of your web app: overall satisfaction with reading, a rating for loading speed, layout, saving and offline reading, and what is missing. Use it as it is or change any question, and Usertick reads every written answer for you.

What this news app feedback survey tells you

A news app feedback survey asks regular readers how reading in your app works for them. This template takes about a minute: one satisfaction rating, a grid that rates four parts of the reading experience from poor to excellent, and an open question about what is missing.

It is written for a popup in your web app or on your site, shown to returning readers from their fifth visit. The same script runs in web apps and single-page apps. A mobile app built for phones can't show the popup, so open a link made from the same template from the app's menu or settings screen instead.

Every written answer is read as it arrives and filed under a category from your list, such as reading and playback or account and access, with a type and a sentiment, so a crash report stands apart from a feature request. Results shows the share of satisfied readers and a heat map for the grid with an average for each row.

The 3 questions, one by one

What each question asks, why it is there, what it shows you and what to change.

Question 1 of 3 · Stars

How satisfied are you with reading in our app?

Why ask it
One overall score tells you whether reading in the app works before the grid tells you which part doesn't.
What you learn
The star average, a bar per rating and the share who rated 4 or higher, compared with the period before, and by desktop, tablet and mobile in the Devices card of the Audience tab.
Make it yours
Keep the survey running through each release that changes reading, and compare the score with the period before.
Question 2 of 3 · Matrix · Optional

How well does each of these work?

Why ask it
Readers judge a news app by a few everyday things: how fast stories open, whether the text is comfortable to read, and whether saving and offline reading work on the train.
What you learn
A heat map with a row for each feature and its average, so the weakest one, such as reading offline, stands out at a glance.
Make it yours
Swap the rows for the features you are weighing, such as audio articles or a dark theme, and keep it to four or five rows.
Question 3 of 3 · Text · Optional

What's missing from the app?

Why ask it
The grid rates what the app already has. The open question collects what readers expected and didn't find.
What you learn
Usertick reads each answer as it arrives, gives it a category, a theme and a sentiment, and marks it as an idea, a bug or a complaint, so missing features and broken ones land in separate piles.
Make it yours
On every plan, send answers marked as bugs to Jira or Linear with a workflow, so the app team sees them in the reader's words.

What the answers show

Results turns each question into numbers you can follow week by week.

How satisfied are you with reading in our app?

How well does each of these work?

Each row's answers side by side, so the part that needs work stands out.

Every written answer, read for you

Each answer arrives with its category, theme, type and urgency, so the urgent ones reach your team first.

Tips for this survey

Small choices that keep people answering and the answers useful.

  1. 01

    Ask returning readers only

Set the visitor type to returning with at least five visits, so readers judge the app after real use.

  2. 02

    Leave out the setup screens

Use page rules to exclude sign-up, checkout and account pages, so the survey opens while someone is reading.

  3. 03

    Check it on a phone

On screens 480 px wide or narrower the popup opens as a sheet at the bottom of the screen. Preview the grid at that size before you publish.

  4. 04

Link it from a mobile app

If you also have an app built for phones, add a link survey made from the same template to its settings or help screen, so those readers can answer in the browser.
