Usertick
Product roadmap survey template

Let customers weigh what you build next, with points, a pick and a reason

Three questions to send before planning: customers divide 100 points across your candidate features, choose the one they would keep and explain why. Use it as it is or change any question, and Usertick reads every written answer for you.

What this product roadmap survey tells you

A product roadmap survey asks customers to weigh the features you are considering, so planning starts from their priorities instead of the loudest request. This template takes about a minute: 100 points split across five candidates, the single feature they would keep if they could have only one, and an open question about why that one.

It is written for an email a few weeks before quarterly planning, sent by Usertick to a contact list of active customers. Share the same link in your product newsletter or community, or show it as a popup in your web app to signed-in customers, aimed from Starter by traits such as their plan.

Usertick reads each written reason, files it under a category from your list, such as features and gaps or speed and reliability, and marks it as an idea, a complaint or a question. Results shows the average points per feature and the share who picked each one, and selecting a pick narrows the page to those customers and their reasons.

The 3 questions, one by one

What each question asks, why it is there, what it shows you and what to change.

Question 1 of 3 · Points allocation · Optional

Divide 100 points across what we should build next

Why ask it
Points show strength of preference: a customer who puts 80 points on performance cares more than one who spreads 20 across everything. A plain vote loses that difference, and the answer counts once all 100 points are placed.
What you learn
Results shows the average points per feature, against the period before, so you see how the weight moved since the last planning round.
Make it yours
List the five candidates you are actually choosing between, each described in a few words customers understand, and keep the total at 100 so the split reads as a share.
Question 2 of 3 · Multiple choice

If you could only have one, which would it be?

Why ask it
Points can be spread evenly; a single pick can't. It shows the feature each customer would trade the rest for, and it gives every customer a vote even when they skipped the points.
What you learn
A donut with the share and count of each pick. Select a pick to read only those customers' reasons and see how they split their points.
Make it yours
Keep the options identical to the points question, so the two results compare line by line.
Question 3 of 3 · Text · Optional

Why that one?

Why ask it
The reason behind the pick names the problem the feature solves, which can point to a smaller fix than the feature itself.
What you learn
Usertick reads each reason, gives it a theme and a type, and lists the answers filterable by theme, so reasons such as slow exports or contractors seeing too much group together.
Make it yours
Read the reasons before the totals in your planning meeting: two customers asking for a mobile app may want very different things.

What the answers show

Results turns each question into numbers you can follow week by week.

If you could only have one, which would it be?

The share of each answer with its count. Select an answer to narrow the whole page to those people and read what else they said.

Every written answer, read for you

Each answer arrives with its category, theme, type and urgency, so the urgent ones reach your team first.

Tips for this survey

Small choices that keep people answering and the answers useful.

  1. 01

Send it a few weeks ahead

Schedule the send up to 30 days ahead, so the answers are in before the planning meeting and there is time to read the reasons.

  2. 02

    Offer real candidates only

List features you would build if they won. Customers notice when a winning pick never ships, and they remember it at the next vote.

  3. 03

    Compare groups before deciding

Add a question about the customer's plan or team size, then select an answer in Results to see how that group split its points.

  4. 04

    Share the result back

Tell customers what won and when to expect it in your next newsletter, so they see that the last vote mattered.

Frequently asked questions

Points show how much each customer cares, so a feature a few customers need badly stands out from one many customers like a little. The single pick in question 2 gives you the vote as well.

Four to six. This template lists five, which customers can weigh in about a minute; a longer list makes the points harder to split.

Results counts every answer the same. To weigh by account size, add a question about the plan or team size and compare the groups, or send each answer to Google Sheets with a workflow.
