Usertick
Release notes survey template

Write release notes customers read, in the format and place they prefer

Three questions at the bottom of your changelog: how often people read it, a short list or the full story, by email or inside the product, and which recent update they missed. Usertick reads every written answer and groups the missed updates into themes.

What this release notes survey tells you

A release notes survey asks the people who use your product whether your changelog reaches them and how they want to hear about changes. This template takes under a minute: how often they read release notes, two quick either-or choices on format and place, and one open question about the recent update they missed or didn't understand.

It is written for the end of your changelog page, where the survey sits inside the page under the latest entry and shows as soon as the page loads. The changelog needs the Usertick script on your own domain. The same survey also runs as a link at the bottom of your release email, or as a popup in your web app after a big release.

Results shows the share for each reading habit and a split bar for each either-or pair, against the period before. Usertick reads each written answer and files it under a theme from your list with a type and a sentiment, so the updates people missed are listed in one place.

The 3 questions, one by one

What each question asks, why it is there, what it shows you and what to change.

Question 1 of 3 · Multiple choice

How often do you read our release notes?

Why ask it
Customers who don't read release notes miss the features you built for them. The answer I didn't know they existed is a finding on its own, since it tells you the notes are hard to find.
What you learn
A donut with the share and count of each answer, over time as stacked shares. Select Rarely to see which format and place those readers would prefer.
Make it yours
On the changelog page everyone answering has already found it, so also share the link in your app or by email to hear from the people who haven't.
Question 2 of 3 · This or that

Which would you prefer?

Why ask it
Two either-or pairs settle the two choices every release note makes: how long to write and where to put it.
What you learn
A split bar per pair, A short list against The full story and By email against Inside the product, each with its share. Select each answer in the first question to compare frequent and rare readers.
Make it yours
Swap in a pair your team argues about, such as a monthly digest against a note per release, and keep it to two pairs so the question stays quick.
Question 3 of 3 · Text · Optional

Which recent update did you miss or not understand?

Why ask it
A missed or confusing update is a feature customers paid for and don't use. Asking about a recent one keeps the answer specific.
What you learn
Usertick reads each answer and gives it a theme, a type such as a question or a complaint, and a sentiment. Results lists the answers filterable by theme, with up to 8 themes and their trends.
Make it yours
Read the answers the week after each release, and explain the updates people didn't understand in the next note.

What the answers show

Results turns each question into numbers you can follow week by week.

How often do you read our release notes?

The share of each answer with its count. Select an answer to narrow the whole page to those people and read what else they said.

Every written answer, read for you

Each answer arrives with its category, theme, type and urgency, so the urgent ones reach your team first.

Tips for this survey

Small choices that keep people answering and the answers useful.

  1. 01

Put it under the latest entry

Embed the survey inside the changelog page, so readers reach it after the newest update without a popup in the way.

  2. 02

Ask the people who never visit

Share the link in your release email, or show the survey as a popup in your app after a release, so customers who don't read the changelog can answer too.

  3. 03

Ask again after a new format

Set the survey to show again after a number of days, so readers can answer again once the new style has run for a few releases.

  4. 04

Send confusing updates to the writers

On every plan, a workflow posts each written answer to the Slack or Microsoft Teams channel where release notes are written, so the next note can clear it up.
