Cart abandonment surveys

Find out why carts are left behind

Run a cart abandonment survey on your cart and checkout pages at the moment a shopper hesitates or heads for the exit. See which reason comes up again and again, by device, country and step.

Your analytics shows where carts are left. One question shows why.

Shoppers leave over a shipping price, a missing payment method, a slow delivery date or a form that asked too much. Ask as they go, and the reasons become a list you can rank and fix, starting with the one that costs the most orders.

Where shoppers leave, and what to ask there

Each moment comes with what opens the survey, who it shows to and a template to start from. Keep the reasons that fit your store and add your own.

1. Leaving the cart

Ask as a shopper heads for the exit with items still in the cart. One question with the reasons you can act on, plus Other with room to write, shows what stopped the order.

2. Halfway through checkout

Hear from shoppers who start typing their details and stop. The survey waits until they leave the form without sending it, so nobody is interrupted while they type.

3. Coming back to the cart

A shopper who returns to the cart, or comes back to the tab after a while away, is often comparing prices or waiting on someone. Ask what would help them finish.

4. When a discount code fails

A code that doesn’t work can lose the order on the spot. Ask the moment the error message appears, and the answers show which codes and which emails cause trouble.

5. In your cart reminder email

Reach the shoppers who left before any survey could open. Put the survey’s link in the reminder your email tool already sends, and their answers arrive with the rest.

6. After the order, for comparison

Ask the shoppers who did finish how easy checkout was, right under their order. Their answers beside the reasons of those who left show which fix matters most.

See which reason costs the most orders

Results ranks every reason, splits it by device and country, and AI reads what shoppers wrote under Other.

The reasons, ranked

See each reason’s share of the answers, and select one to filter the whole page to the shoppers who gave it.

Phones and desktops apart

Filter by device, or open the built-in Mobile view, to see whether phone shoppers leave for other reasons than desktop shoppers.

Every written reason, read

AI files each answer written under Other under a theme such as delivery dates or promo codes, in any language, so a new reason shows up as a count.

Act on each reason the day it comes in

Workflows send each answer to the team and the tool that can do something about it.

Payment problems reach the team at once

A workflow posts every answer that names a failed payment to your Slack or Microsoft Teams channel, with the country and the page it came from. Every plan.

Your email tool learns the reason

Klaviyo receives an event on the shopper’s profile when their email is known, so your flows can reply to the reason the shopper gave. Every plan.

How to write a cart abandonment survey that gets answers

  1. 01

    Offer reasons you can fix

List the reasons your team can act on: the shipping price, the delivery date, payment methods, account creation and the price itself. Keep Other with room to write, and shuffle the options so their order doesn’t steer the answer.

  2. 02

    Ask once, in a corner

Show the survey once per shopper, as a popup in a corner that leaves the checkout button free. On small screens it becomes a sheet at the bottom of the screen.

  3. 03

    Never interrupt typing

Ask after the form is left, never while it’s being filled in. On the Pro plan and above, Don’t interrupt also waits for typing and scrolling to stop.

  4. 04

Treat phones as their own case

On phones, exit intent fires on a fast scroll back to the top. Give phones their own condition, such as a delay, and compare their reasons with desktop.

  5. 05

Compare with the shoppers who bought

Ask customers on the confirmation page what almost stopped them. The reasons both groups share are the ones to fix first.

  6. 06

    Read the reasons every week

Check which reason is rising, and send failed payments to someone the same day. The weekly AI reading names what changed and what to look at first.

Frequently asked questions

Ask when a shopper heads for the exit from the cart, leaves the checkout form without sending it, or comes back to the cart after a while away. Show it once per shopper, and leave the payment step alone unless something there goes wrong.

Yes. Phones have no pointer, so Usertick watches for the fast scroll back toward the top that people use to leave. You can also give phones their own condition, such as a delay on the cart page, while desktop keeps exit intent.

It doesn’t have to. Show it as a small popup in a corner, which becomes a sheet at the bottom of small screens, and only one popup shows at a time. The form trigger waits until the shopper leaves the form, and on the Pro plan and above Don’t interrupt also waits for typing and scrolling to stop.

A call to action question can show a button that opens a page, such as your shipping policy or a page with an offer. Usertick doesn’t create discount codes, so the offer itself stays in your store.

Yes. Install guides cover Shopify, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Magento, Wix, Squarespace and more, and the code also goes in through Google Tag Manager. Any store where you can add a script to its pages works.

Yes. Put the survey’s link in the cart reminder your email tool already sends, and the answers arrive in Usertick with the ones from your site.

Yes. Results filters every chart by device, country, page and date, and the built-in Mobile view opens on the answers given on phones. Dashboards can also group answers by device or country.

Exit intent, page rules, delays, idle triggers, alerts in Slack and Microsoft Teams and the Klaviyo connection work on the Free plan, and so do the form, element and page error triggers on 1 survey. Starter adds those triggers on every survey. Hesitation and Don’t interrupt are on the Pro plan and above.
