Usertick
Feature feedback survey template

Hear how a feature did its job, from the people who just used it

Three questions the second time someone uses a feature: how well it did what they needed, which part matters most and what is missing. The example feature is an export, so change the wording to your own feature, and Usertick reads every written answer for you.

What this feature feedback survey tells you

A feature feedback survey asks users how a specific feature worked, right after they used it. This template takes under a minute: a star rating for how well it did the job, the part of the feature that matters most and one open question about what is missing or in the way. The example feature is an export; replace it and the options with your own.

It is written for a popup in your web app, the second time someone uses the feature, when they have seen it work at least once. From Starter, or on 1 survey on Free, fire a custom event such as Usertick.trigger("export_used") from your code and set calls needed to 2, so the survey opens on the second use. Leave the show frequency on until answered so each user sees it once.

Results shows the average rating with a bar per star and the share who rated it 4 or higher, and the share of each part, against the period before. Usertick reads each written answer and files it under a category such as features and gaps, with a type and an urgency.

The 3 questions, one by one

What each question asks, why it is there, what it shows you and what to change.

Question 1 of 3 · Stars

How well did the export do what you needed?

Why ask it
The rating asks about the job the user came to do, which decides whether they use the feature again. A five-star scale makes it one tap.
What you learn
The average, a bar per rating and the share who rated it 4 or higher, compared with the period before. Select the low ratings to read what got in those users' way.
Make it yours
Change the export to your feature's name in the label, and keep the wording the same across releases so the scores compare.
Question 2 of 3 · Multiple choice

Which part of it matters most to you?

Why ask it
Knowing which part users value most tells you what to protect when you change the feature and what to improve first. It also tells you which part to lead with when you announce a change.
What you learn
A donut with the share and count of each part, with typed Other answers listed. Select Scheduling exports to see how those users rated the feature.
Make it yours
List three to five parts of your own feature, and keep Other for the ones you didn't think of.
Question 3 of 3 · Text · Optional

What's missing or getting in your way?

Why ask it
One open question catches the missing piece or the friction the rating can't explain, in the user's own words.
What you learn
Usertick reads each answer, gives it a theme, a type such as a bug or an idea, and a sentiment, and marks the urgent ones. Results lists the answers filterable by theme, with up to 8 themes and their trends.
Make it yours
Keep it optional, so users who are happy with the feature can finish in two taps.

Tips for this survey

Small choices that keep people answering and the answers useful.

  1. 01

    Wait for the second use

Set calls needed to 2 on the custom event, so users rate a feature they have tried once already and came back to.

  2. 02

    Run one survey per feature

Make a separate survey for each feature you want to check, each on its own event, so the ratings and requests never mix in Results.

  3. 03

Compare before and after a change

Keep the survey running through a release that changes the feature, and compare the rating for the period after with the period before.

  4. 04

    Send ideas to the backlog

On every plan, a workflow creates a Jira or Linear issue for each response or for each theme, so requests reach the team that owns the feature.
