Usertick
Statement clarity survey template

Make the monthly statement easy to read, by asking the people who read it

Three quick questions alongside the statement: how easy it is to read, what customers look for first and whether they prefer paper or digital. Add an open question and Usertick reads every written answer for you.

What this bank statement survey tells you

A bank statement survey asks customers whether the statement does its job. This template asks three questions in about 30 seconds: how easy the statement is to read, what they look for first and whether they prefer paper or digital statements.

It is written for the statement email, once a year: put the survey's link in the email that announces the statement, or send the survey from Usertick to your customer list the same week. Its QR code can be printed on paper statements, so customers who read on paper can answer too, and a copy of the survey can open as a popup on the statements page of your online banking.

Results shows the readability rating with the share who rated 4 or higher, bars for what customers look for first and a split bar for paper or digital, each against the period before. Add an open question and Usertick reads each written answer, files it under a category from your list and gives it a type and an urgency.

The 3 questions, one by one

What each question asks, why it is there, what it shows you and what to change.

Question 1 of 3 · Stars

How easy is your statement to read?

Why ask it
A statement that is hard to read brings calls about charges that were always there. A 5-point rating from very difficult to very easy shows whether a redesign helped.
What you learn
Results shows the average, a bar per rating and the share who rated 4 or higher, against the period before.
Make it yours
Ask the year before and the year after a redesign, with the same question, so the two ratings compare.
Question 2 of 3 · Multiple choice · Optional

What do you look for first?

Why ask it
What customers look for first should be at the top of the page. Picking from five items shows whether that is the balance, the fees or anything unusual.
What you learn
Bars show the share and count of each item, since customers can pick more than one, and over time as stacked shares.
Make it yours
Select Anything unusual to see how those customers rated readability, because they are the ones who read every line.
Question 3 of 3 · This or that

Which do you prefer?

Why ask it
Paper statements cost printing and postage, and digital ones go unread when nobody opens the email. The preference shows how far you can move to digital without leaving people behind.
What you learn
Results shows a split bar for Paper statements against Digital statements, with each side's share.
Make it yours
Answers from a QR code on paper statements will lean to paper, so give the printed code its own copy of the survey and read the two groups apart.

What the answers show

Results turns each question into numbers you can follow week by week.

How easy is your statement to read?

The average rating and the share who gave 4 or 5 stars, against the period before.

What do you look for first?

The share of each answer with its count. Select an answer to narrow the whole page to those people and read what else they said.

Tips for this survey

Small choices that keep people answering and the answers useful.

  1. 01

Print the code on paper statements

Give paper readers their own copy of the survey and print its QR code on the statement, so they answer too and their preference stays separate from email readers.

  2. 02

Ask once a year, by hand

Usertick has no recurring sends. Send it with the statement each year, and turn off Skip people who already received this survey before the second year's send.

  3. 03

    Add one open question

The template has no written question. Add an optional What would you change on your statement? at the end, so Usertick reads the lines customers struggle with.

  4. 04

Test a new layout on a small group

Before a redesign, send the new statement to a small group with its own copy of the survey, and compare its readability rating with the current statement's.

Print the survey's QR code on the paper statement. Customers scan it with their phone and answer on the hosted survey page, and a copy of the survey kept for the printed code keeps paper readers' answers separate.

It shows how many prefer digital, which tells you how far a move can go. Follow up with the customers who picked paper before you change anything for them.
