Advocacy action survey template

Turn one action into the next one

Three quick questions on the thank-you page after supporters sign, write or call: how easy it was, how much they feel it made a difference and what they would do next. Add an open question at the end, and Usertick reads every written answer for you.

What this advocacy action survey tells you

An advocacy action survey asks supporters about the action they just took, on the page that thanks them for it. This template takes about 30 seconds: an ease score for the action, a 1 to 10 score for whether it felt like it made a difference, and a choice of next steps.

It is written for the thank-you page after a petition, a letter or a call tool, where the survey sits inside the page under the thank-you message and shows as soon as the page loads. The website script must run on your own domain, so for an action page hosted on another platform, switch the survey to a link and add it to that page's thank-you message.

Results compares the ease score with the period before and shows the share who found it easy, the average sense of difference with a column per step, and the share of each next step. Add an optional open question, and Usertick reads each written answer, files it under a category from your list, such as communication or impact and updates, and marks its type and urgency.

The 3 questions, one by one

What each question asks, why it is there, what it shows you and what to change.

Question 1 of 3 · Customer effort

How easy was it to take action?

Why ask it
The supporters who got through the action page can say where it was hard, such as finding their representative or a form that asked for too much. Each extra field on an action page is one more step where a supporter can give up.
What you learn
Results shows the average on the 1 to 7 scale and the share who found it easy, with a hard-to-easy bar, against the period before. The Audience tab shows the score on each device and each page.
Make it yours
Run the same survey on every action page, so a petition and a call tool can be compared by their ease scores.
Question 2 of 3 · Big scale

How much do you feel your action made a difference?

Why ask it
Whether supporters feel the action mattered shapes how you thank them and what you report back. The 1 to 10 scale shows the range between none and a great deal.
What you learn
Results shows the average and a column per step from 1 to 10, compared with the period before. Select the low steps to see which next steps those supporters still chose.
Make it yours
When scores sit low, send an update after the vote or the meeting that shows what the action led to.
Question 3 of 3 · Multiple choice · Optional

What would you do next?

Why ask it
The question offers the next step while supporters are still on the page, and it tells you which steps they are ready for. They can pick several.
What you learn
Bars show the share and count of each next step, and over time the stacked shares show whether a campaign moves supporters from sharing toward giving. Select Make a donation to see how easy those supporters found the action and how much they felt it mattered.
Make it yours
Match the options to what your campaign can offer this month, and drop any you can't follow up on.

What the answers show

Results turns each question into numbers you can follow week by week.

How easy was it to take action?

The average on its own scale and the share who found it easy, against the period before and by device.

What would you do next?

The share of each answer with its count. Select an answer to narrow the whole page to those people and read what else they said.

Tips for this survey

Small choices that keep people answering and the answers useful.

  1. 01

Show it on the thank-you page only

Target the survey to the thank-you page, so only supporters who finished the action see it.

  2. 02

    Ask each supporter once

Keep the default show frequency, until answered, so a supporter who takes three actions answers once. For a long campaign, set it to show again after a number of days.

  3. 03

    Add one open question

Add an optional text question such as What made you take action today?, and Usertick reads each answer for its category, theme, sentiment and urgency.

  4. 04

    Compare your action pages

Run one survey across every action page, and the Pages card in Results shows each page's share of answers and its ease score.
