Home inspection survey template

Learn whether your report helped buyers decide, a week after they read it

Three quick questions for home buyers after the inspection: how thorough it was, how clear the report was and whether it changed their decision. Use it as it is or change any question, and add an open question when you want the details in the buyer's words, which Usertick reads for you.

What this home inspection survey tells you

A home inspection feedback survey asks buyers whether the inspection gave them what they needed to decide. This template asks three questions in about 25 seconds: a rating for how thorough the inspection was, a rating for how clear the report was and whether the report changed the buyer's decision.

It is written for an email a week after the report is delivered, with the first rating inside the email. The same template also runs as a link at the end of your report, as a QR code on the business card you leave, or as a popup on the website where buyers book inspections.

Results shows the two ratings against the period before and the share of buyers who went ahead, renegotiated or walked away. Choose I walked away to see how those buyers rated the report. When you add an open question, Usertick reads each answer and files it under a category from your list, such as maintenance and repairs or communication, with a type and a sentiment.

The 3 questions, one by one

What each question asks, why it is there, what it shows you and what to change.

Question 1 of 3 · Stars

How thorough was the inspection?

Why ask it
Buyers hire an inspector to find what they can't see. A thoroughness rating shows whether they felt the attic, the crawl space and the roof got the attention they paid for.
What you learn
The average, a bar per rating and the share who rated 4 or higher, compared with the period before.
Make it yours
Keep it first, so buyers can answer inside the email with one tap.
Question 2 of 3 · Stars

How clear was the report?

Why ask it
A thorough inspection helps only when the buyer can read the report. A clarity rating shows whether your photos, summaries and repair notes make sense to someone who isn't a contractor.
What you learn
The average, a bar per rating and the share who rated 4 or higher. Select 1 or 2 stars to see which decisions those buyers made.
Make it yours
When you change your report format, compare this rating with the period before to see whether buyers found the new one clearer.
Question 3 of 3 · Multiple choice

Did the report change your decision?

Why ask it
The decision shows what the report was worth to the buyer. Renegotiating or walking away means the report surfaced something that mattered, and going ahead as planned can mean the house was sound.
What you learn
A donut with the share and count of each decision, with stacked shares over time.
Make it yours
Read this answer as context and never as a target, since your job is to report what you find whatever the buyer decides.

What the answers show

Results turns each question into numbers you can follow week by week.

How thorough was the inspection?

The average rating and the share who gave 4 or 5 stars, against the period before.

Did the report change your decision?

The share of each answer with its count. Select an answer to narrow the whole page to those people and read what else they said.

Tips for this survey

Small choices that keep people answering and the answers useful.

  1. 01

Ask a week after the report

By then the buyer has read the report, talked to their agent and made a decision. Sent any earlier, the third question has no answer yet.

  2. 02

    Add an open question

The template has no written question. Add an optional one at the end, such as What was missing from the report?, so Usertick can read and sort what buyers say about it.

  3. 03

    Stay in touch with agents

Agents recommend inspectors to their buyers. When a buyer rates you highly, a short note to their agent keeps you in mind for the next one.

  4. 04

    Compare inspectors

In a firm with several inspectors, run one copy per inspector or add a question that names them, so each sees their own ratings.
