Usertick
Site search survey template

Learn whether search finds it, and what it missed when it didn't

Three questions on your search results page: how relevant the results are and, for low ratings, what the person was looking for and what was wrong with the list. Use it as it is or change any question, and Usertick reads every written answer for you.

What this site search survey tells you

A site search survey asks people about the results they are looking at, right on the results page. This template takes under a minute: a five-star rating for relevance, then, for anyone who rates 3 or lower, what they were looking for and what was wrong with the results, such as the item missing or too far down the list.

It is written for a popup on the search results page of your website or web app, opened a few seconds after the results load. Target the results page by its address on every plan, or, from Starter or on 1 survey on Free, open the survey from a custom event your page fires after a search. For a search box that shows results without changing the address, the custom event is the way to reach the right moment.

Usertick reads each written answer, files it under a category from your list, such as ease of use or features and gaps, and gives it a theme and a type. Results shows the relevance average with the share who rated 4 or higher, the share of each problem with the results, and the searches people describe, filterable by theme.

The 3 questions, one by one

What each question asks, why it is there, what it shows you and what to change.

Question 1 of 3 · Stars

How relevant are these search results?

Why ask it
A relevance rating, asked while the results are on screen, scores search on the person's own terms. A rating of 4 or 5 ends the survey, so satisfied searchers answer in one tap.
What you learn
The average on five stars, a bar per rating and the share who rated 4 or higher, against the period before, so a change to your search setup shows its effect.
Make it yours
Add a short delay, so the rating comes after people have scanned the list.
Question 2 of 3 · Text · Optional

What were you looking for?

Why ask it
What people were looking for, in their words, shows the gap between their vocabulary and the names in your catalog or help content.
What you learn
Usertick reads each answer, gives it a theme from your list and a sentiment, and lists the answers filterable by theme, so repeated searches with poor results group together.
Make it yours
Add the words people use as synonyms in your search tool, so the next search with those words finds the right page.
Question 3 of 3 · Multiple choice · Optional

What was wrong with the results?

Why ask it
The kind of failure tells you what to fix: missing content, poor ranking, too much noise or stale results.
What you learn
Bars with the share and count of each problem, since people can pick several, with typed Other answers listed. Select What I wanted wasn't there to read the searches for content you don't have yet.
Make it yours
Rename the options to fit your content, such as products, articles or listings, so they read naturally.

What the answers show

Tips for this survey

Small choices that keep people answering and the answers useful.

  1. 01

    Ask after the results load

Use a delay of a few seconds on the results page, so people see the list before they rate it.

  2. 02

Keep the skip for good results

Leave the rule that ends the survey at 4 or 5, so only searches that disappointed get the follow-up questions.

  3. 03

Show it again after a while

Set the frequency to show again after a number of days, so people who search often can rate later searches too.

  4. 04

Pair it with your search logs

Compare the phrases in question 2 with your search logs to find the queries that return results, but the wrong ones.

Yes. The same script runs in web apps and single-page apps, and page rules are checked again after in-app navigation.
