Strengths and weaknesses survey template

Learn what to protect, and what to fix first

Three questions for active customers: the three things they value most, the one area to improve first and the detail behind it. Use it as it is or change any question, and Usertick reads every written answer for you.

What this strengths and weaknesses survey tells you

A strengths and weaknesses survey asks customers to pick what they value and what needs work, so you know what to protect and where to spend effort next. This template takes about a minute: the three things they value most from a short list, the one area to improve first, and an open question for the detail.

It is written for a popup in your web app, shown to active customers after they have opened a few pages, or a link you add to your own newsletter. Usertick can also send it by email to a contact list, with the first question inside the email, so a tap on a strength opens the rest of the survey with that answer kept.

Usertick reads each written answer, files it under a category from your list, such as ease of use or pricing and value, and marks it as a complaint, an idea or a bug, with an urgency. Results shows the share of each strength and each area to improve, and selecting Price narrows every card to the customers who chose it, so you can read what those customers value and what they wrote about the price.

The 3 questions, one by one

What each question asks, why it is there, what it shows you and what to change.

Question 1 of 3 · Multiple choice

Which three things do you value most about us?

Why ask it
Strengths are what customers would miss if they left, and what competitors have to beat. Limiting the pick to three shows what matters most.
What you learn
Bars with the share and count of each strength, with typed Other answers listed, over time as stacked shares. Select a strength to see what the customers who value it want improved.
Make it yours
Set a maximum of three selections, so the answers match what the question asks for.
Question 2 of 3 · Multiple choice

What should we improve first?

Why ask it
One area to improve first forces a priority, so the result reads as a ranking instead of a wish list.
What you learn
A donut with the share of each area, with typed Other answers listed. Choose an area to read only the written detail from those customers.
Make it yours
Keep the two lists parallel, so you can see when the same area is a strength for some customers and a weakness for others.
Question 3 of 3 · Text · Optional

Tell us more about what we should improve

Why ask it
The pick says where; the detail says what. A customer who picks Reliability may mean outages, slow pages or lost work.
What you learn
Usertick reads each answer, gives it a theme from your list, a type and an urgency, and lists the answers filterable by theme.
Make it yours
Keep it optional, so customers with nothing to add still send the first two answers.

Tips for this survey

Small choices that keep people answering and the answers useful.

  1. 01

    Ask active customers

Target signed-in users on the pages they use most, and from Starter by plan or signup date passed with Usertick.identify(), so the answers come from people who know the product.

  2. 02

    Protect the top strength

Share the top strength with the teams that own it, so a redesign or a price change doesn't wear it down.

  3. 03

Repeat it once or twice a year

Compare the share of each area with the period before to see whether the last round's fix moved it.

  4. 04

    Close the loop

Tell customers what you changed in the top area in your next newsletter, so they see what their answers led to.
