Usertick
End of trial survey template

Know who will subscribe, before the trial runs out

Four questions for trial users two days before the trial ends: whether they plan to continue, what is holding them back, how fair the price feels and what would make it an easy yes. Use it as it is or change any question, and Usertick reads every written answer for you.

What this end of trial survey tells you

An end of trial survey asks trial users where they stand while there is still time to help them decide. This template keeps it to four questions and about a minute: whether they plan to subscribe, what is holding them back, how fair the price feels for what they get, and what would make it an easy yes.

It is written for an email two days before the trial ends, sent to the users whose trial ends that week. The same survey runs as a popup in your web app for trial users near the end, targeted from Starter with a plan or signup date passed through Usertick.identify().

Results shows the share who plan to subscribe, the share of each reason holding the rest back and the average fairness score on the 1 to 10 scale, against the period before. Every written answer is read as it arrives and filed under a category such as pricing and plans or features and gaps, with a type and an urgency.

In an email

Send it from Usertick to a contact list, with the first question inside the email. A tap on an answer opens the rest of the survey with that answer already kept. Usertick sends 50 emails a month on the free plan, or connect your own sender.

The 4 questions, one by one

What each question asks, why it is there, what it shows you and what to change.

Question 1 of 4 · Multiple choice

Do you plan to continue after your trial?

Why ask it
A direct question about intent sorts trial users into three groups your team can act on: ready to pay, undecided and leaving.
What you learn
A donut with the share of each answer, compared with the period before. Select Maybe, I need more time to see what those users need before they decide.
Make it yours
Reach the undecided group first, since a longer trial or a short call can still change their answer. In the email, users tap their answer inside the message.
Question 2 of 4 · Multiple choice · Optional

What's holding you back, if anything?

Why ask it
Several things can hold a trial user back at once, so the question allows more than one answer, with Nothing for users who are ready.
What you learn
Bars with the share and count of each reason, with typed Other answers listed. Select No in the first question to see what holds back the users you are about to lose.
Make it yours
If you want a shorter survey for users who will subscribe, add a rule on the first question that sends them straight to the price question.
Question 3 of 4 · Big scale

How fair does the price feel for what you get?

Why ask it
Fairness asks about value for money, which separates users who find the price high from users who find it high for what they got.
What you learn
The average and a column per step from 1, not fair at all, to 10, very fair, compared with the period before, so a price or plan change shows in the next period.
Make it yours
Select The price in the second question and read the fairness scores of those users, to see whether they need a cheaper plan or a clearer one.
Question 4 of 4 · Text · Optional

What would make it an easy yes?

Why ask it
The answer names the one thing that would end the hesitation, such as a feature, a discount or more time, in the user's words.
What you learn
Usertick reads each answer, files it under a category and a theme, marks it as an idea, a question or a complaint, and flags the urgent ones.
Make it yours
On every plan, a workflow can post every answer from a user who said No to a Slack or Microsoft Teams channel, so your team can reply before the trial ends.

Tips for this survey

Small choices that keep people answering and the answers useful.

  1. 01

Send it two days before the end

Each week, send the survey to the list of trials ending in the next few days, or schedule the send up to 30 days ahead. Usertick doesn't time it to each user's own trial.

  2. 02

    Work the undecided group

A trial extension or a short call reaches undecided users while they still have access. Use the inbox to give each of their responses an owner.

  3. 03

    Pass the trial details

In your web app, call Usertick.identify() with the plan and signup date, so every answer carries them and, from Starter, the popup shows only to trial users.

  4. 04

    Watch fairness after price changes

Read the average fairness score for the period after any change to your plans or prices, and compare it with the period before.
