Usertick
Plan upgrade survey template

Learn what keeps free users from upgrading, at the limit that made them think about it

Two questions for free users who just hit a plan limit: what stops them from upgrading today and which paid feature would help most. Use it as it is, or add an open question and Usertick reads every written answer for you.

What this plan upgrade survey tells you

A plan upgrade survey asks free users what stands between them and a paid plan at the moment they reach its edge. This template asks two questions in under half a minute: what is stopping them from upgrading today, from the price to someone else's approval, and which paid feature would help them most.

It is written for a popup in your web app that opens when a free user hits a plan limit, fired by a custom event in your code (from Starter, or on 1 survey on Free). The same survey goes out by email to free users who reached a limit this month, and a redirect after submit can take every user who answers to your plans page.

Results shows the share of each reason and of each paid feature, with typed Other answers listed, against the period before. Select a reason to see which feature those users want, so you know what to put in front of each group. Add an open question at the end if you want the reasons in users' own words: Usertick reads every written answer and files it under a category such as pricing and plans, with a type and an urgency.

The 2 questions, one by one

What each question asks, why it is there, what it shows you and what to change.

Question 1 of 2 · Multiple choice

What's stopping you from upgrading today?

Why ask it
The reasons separate problems you solve in different places: price, need, clarity, approval and timing. Users who simply haven't gotten to it need a reminder more than a discount.
What you learn
A donut with the share and count of each reason, with typed Other answers listed, compared with the period before and as stacked shares over time. Select a reason to filter the whole page to the users who gave it.
Make it yours
If many users aren't sure what they would get, fix your plan comparison before you change the price, then check whether that share falls in the next period.
Question 2 of 2 · Multiple choice

Which paid feature would help you most?

Why ask it
The feature users want most tells you which limit or feature sells the paid plan, and what to show at the moment of the limit. Two users who hit the same limit may want different things, such as more seats or better reports.
What you learn
A donut with the share and count of each feature, with typed Other answers listed. Select The price in the first question to see which feature price-sensitive users would still pay for.
Make it yours
Match the options to your own paid plans, using the names on your pricing page, and keep the Other answer so features you haven't listed still show up.

Tips for this survey

Small choices that keep people answering and the answers useful.

  1. 01

    Open it at the limit

From Starter, or on 1 survey on Free, call Usertick.trigger('plan_limit_reached') when a free user hits a limit, so the survey opens at the moment the question makes sense.

  2. 02

    Point users to your plans

Set a redirect after submit to your plans page, or add a Call to action question with an upgrade button, so the survey ends one click from upgrading.

  3. 03

    Ask each user once

Leave the show frequency on until answered, so a user who answered at one limit isn't asked again at the next.

  4. 04

    Route approval answers to sales

On every plan, a workflow posts every answer of Someone else has to approve it to your sales channel in Slack or Microsoft Teams, so someone can offer a quote or a call.
