Usertick
Referral survey template

Design a referral program people use, before you build it

Three quick questions for engaged users: whether they would invite a friend, which reward they want most and the easiest way to share. Every answer is a tap, and Usertick reads any written answer you add.

What this referral program survey tells you

A referral program survey asks your engaged users whether they would bring a friend and what would make it easy. This template takes about 25 seconds: a yes or no on inviting a friend, the reward they would like most, and the way they would rather share, from a link to a QR code. Asking first tells you which reward to fund and which share option to build before any code is written.

It is written for a user's fifth session, when they know the app well enough to recommend it. In a web app, a custom event your code fires each session, with calls needed set to 5, opens it on the fifth (from Starter, or on 1 survey on Free). Inside a phone app, have the app open the survey's link after the fifth session. It also goes by email to active users, with the first question inside the message.

Results shows the share who would invite a friend, and a donut for the reward and for the share method with each share and count, against the period before. Choose Yes to see which reward and method the users most likely to invite chose. Add an open question, and Usertick reads each answer and files it under a theme from your list.

The 3 questions, one by one

What each question asks, why it is there, what it shows you and what to change.

Question 1 of 3 · Yes / No

Would you invite a friend to the app?

Why ask it
The share who would invite a friend tells you whether a referral program is worth building, and it splits the answers to the next two questions by intent.
What you learn
Results shows the share that said yes, against the period before. Select Yes to see the rewards and share methods of users who mean it.
Make it yours
Ask it before you design the program, and again a few months after launch to see whether the share moved.
Question 2 of 3 · Multiple choice

Which reward would you like most?

Why ask it
Rewards cost money, and the choice between a free month, credits and a feature shows what your users value most. The last option shows how many would share without any reward.
What you learn
A donut shows the share and count of each reward. Select A free month to see which share method those users prefer.
Make it yours
List only rewards your business can afford to give, and remove Credits if your app has no credits.
Question 3 of 3 · Multiple choice

What's the easiest way for you to share?

Why ask it
A referral program stalls when sharing takes too many taps, and the four methods cover the common ways an app lets people invite.
What you learn
A donut shows the share and count of each method, and over time the shares stack. Choose Straight from my contacts to see whether those users also said yes to inviting.
Make it yours
Build the method with the largest share first, and keep a plain link as the fallback for everyone else.

What the answers show

Results turns each question into numbers you can follow week by week.

Tips for this survey

Small choices that keep people answering and the answers useful.

  1. 01

    Ask engaged users

Wait until the fifth session, so every answer comes from someone who knows the app. New users can't judge yet whether they would recommend it.

  2. 02

    Read rewards by intent

Select Yes on the first question before you read the rewards, so the program fits the users who would actually invite.

  3. 03

    Price the reward first

Decide which rewards you can afford before you ask, and offer only those, so the top answer is one you can give.

  4. 04

    Ask again after launch

Run the survey for another period after the program ships and compare the share who would invite a friend with the period before.

Frequently asked questions

After a user's fifth session or a similar sign of regular use. Before that, users haven't used the app enough to recommend it. Ask once per user, and again a few months after the program launches.

Usertick runs on websites and in web apps, and doesn't run inside a phone app. Have the app open the survey's link after the fifth session, or send it by email to active users.

Yes. Replace it with an NPS question if you track that score elsewhere. Results then shows promoters, passives and detractors, and selecting promoters filters the rewards to them.

Hold off on the program and find out why. Add an optional question that skip logic shows only to users who said No, and Usertick reads each answer for you.

Yes, when the response has their email. On every plan, a workflow sends each response to HubSpot, Klaviyo or Mailchimp, so you can invite those users when the program goes live.

Yes. Every template comes with every plan, the free plan included, and the free plan covers 150 responses a month across your surveys.

Yes. The template becomes your own survey, so reword any question, add or remove questions, and change the options and the logic. The gallery stays as it is.

Yes, from Starter. The template is written in US English. Add languages by hand or with AI translation, and each person sees the survey in their browser's language.
