Travel website survey template

Find out what helps visitors choose, while they are still searching

Four questions for your search results page: how easy it was to find the right option, how filters, prices, speed and reviews rated, how far visitors trust your reviews and what nearly sent them elsewhere. Use it as it is or change any question, and Usertick reads every written answer for you.

What this travel website survey tells you

A travel website survey asks visitors about the search itself, while they compare hotels, flights or tours on your site. This template takes about 70 seconds: an effort score for finding the right option, a grid for search filters, price clarity, speed, and photos and reviews, a 1 to 10 trust score for your reviews, and an open question about what nearly made them book somewhere else.

It is written for the search results page, opening as a popup after a visitor has spent a few minutes there, with page targeting set to the results pages and a delay or time on site trigger. Exit intent on the same pages reaches visitors who are about to leave, and from Pro, the Frustration smart trigger opens it when a visitor keeps clicking on things that don't respond or meets page errors.

Every written answer is read as it arrives and filed under a category from your list, such as booking and reservations or price and fees, with a type, a sentiment and an urgency. Results shows the average search effort, a heat map of the four parts of the site and the average trust score with a column per step, and selecting an answer narrows the page to those visitors.

The 4 questions, one by one

What each question asks, why it is there, what it shows you and what to change.

Question 1 of 4 · Customer effort

How easy was it to find the right option?

Why ask it
Visitors who can't find the right option leave for another site, usually without a word. A 1 to 7 effort score taken during the search shows how hard your results make the choice.
What you learn
Results shows the average on the 1 to 7 scale, the share who found it easy and a bar from hard to easy, compared with the period before. Filter by device to compare phones with laptops.
Make it yours
Show it after a few minutes on the results page, so the visitor has searched and compared before answering.
Question 2 of 4 · Matrix · Optional

How would you rate the following?

Why ask it
Four rows cover the parts of a results page that decide how fast a visitor chooses: filters that don't narrow enough, prices that change later, slow pages, and thin photos or reviews.
What you learn
A heat map per row with row averages, so weak price clarity stands out against the filters and the speed.
Make it yours
Add the parts your site has, such as the map view or the date grid, and keep the grid short, since in popups and on phones it shows one row at a time.
Question 3 of 4 · Big scale

How much do you trust the reviews on our site?

Why ask it
Reviews do much of the selling on a travel site, and they only work when visitors believe them. A 1 to 10 scale shows trust in finer steps than a yes or no.
What you learn
The average and a column per step from 1 to 10, compared with the period before, so you see whether trust is broad or split between believers and doubters.
Make it yours
Read the low trust scores with question 4, where visitors who doubt your reviews may say why.
Question 4 of 4 · Text · Optional

Did anything nearly make you book somewhere else?

Why ask it
A visitor still in the session remembers the competitor tab, the lower price elsewhere or the missing filter that almost won. Each answer names a reason you can fix or match.
What you learn
Usertick reads each answer as it arrives, files it under a category and a theme from your list, marks it as a complaint, an idea or a question, and flags the urgent ones. Results lists every answer with its sentiment and shows up to eight themes with their trends.
Make it yours
Keep it optional and last, so visitors who are about to book can answer three quick questions and return to their search.

Tips for this survey

Small choices that keep people answering and the answers useful.

  1. 01

    Target the results pages only

Set the page targeting to your search results pages, so the survey never opens on the payment step, where a popup would get in the way.

  2. 02

    Wait for real searching

Use a delay or a time on site trigger of a few minutes. A visitor who has just landed hasn't tried the filters yet.

  3. 03

Ask visitors on the way out

Add exit intent on the same pages, so visitors who are about to leave are asked why before they go.

  4. 04

    Compare phones and laptops

Results pages built for a wide screen can be hard to use on a phone. Filter Results by device every few weeks to see whether yours are.

Target the results pages only and wait a few minutes, so the survey stays off the booking steps. It shows until a visitor answers once, and you can set it to come back after a number of days.

Read the written answers of visitors who scored 1 to 4 to see what they doubt, such as old reviews or reviews that don't name the stay. After each change you make, compare the trust score with the period before.
