Alumni survey template

Learn how close alumni feel, and who will give their time

Three quick questions for once a year: how connected alumni feel, which events they would attend and whether they would mentor a current student. Use it as it is or add an open question, and Usertick reads every written answer for you.

What this alumni survey tells you

An alumni survey asks former students how connected they feel and how they would like to stay involved. This template takes about 30 seconds: a dial from not connected to deeply involved, the events they would attend, from reunions to online talks, and whether they would mentor a current student.

It is written for an email to your alumni list once a year, before you plan the next year's events. Alumni lists can be large, so check your plan's email allowance (50 a month on Free, 500 on Starter, 2,500 on Pro, 10,000 on Business) or connect your own sender, which has no allowance. The same template runs as a link in the alumni newsletter or on the alumni page of your website, as a QR code at a reunion, or as a conversation that asks one question at a time.

Results shows the share of alumni at each step of the dial, bars for each event with their share and count, and the share willing to mentor, each against the period before. Selecting Yes on the mentor question filters the whole page to those alumni. Add an open question, and Usertick reads every written answer and files it under a category with a type and a sentiment.

The 3 questions, one by one

What each question asks, why it is there, what it shows you and what to change.

Question 1 of 3 · Mood dial

How connected do you feel to us today?

Why ask it
Connection is the starting point for every alumni program. A dial with five steps, from not connected to deeply involved, shows where alumni stand in one turn.
What you learn
Results shows each step of the dial with its share, from not connected to deeply involved, against the period before.
Make it yours
The email shows a start button for a dial, so keep a short line above it that says the survey takes 30 seconds, or change it to Emoji to answer inside the message.
Question 2 of 3 · Multiple choice · Optional

Which events would you attend?

Why ask it
Alumni pick every kind of event they would attend, so you can plan the calendar around demand before you book venues or speakers.
What you learn
Bars with the share and count for each event type. Select Online events to see how connected those alumni feel.
Make it yours
Replace the options with events you can really run next year, and keep None right now so alumni who aren't interested can still answer.
Question 3 of 3 · Yes / No

Would you mentor a current student?

Why ask it
Mentoring is one of the most direct ways alumni help current students, and a yes or no turns goodwill into a list of people to call.
What you learn
The share that said yes, against the period before. Select Yes to filter the page and see how connected those alumni feel and which events they chose.
Make it yours
Send it by email, so each yes is tied to that graduate's contact and your team can write to them the same week.

What the answers show

Results turns each question into numbers you can follow week by week.

Which events would you attend?

The share of each answer with its count. Select an answer to narrow the whole page to those people and read what else they said.

Tips for this survey

Small choices that keep people answering and the answers useful.

  1. 01

Send it before planning the calendar

Ask a few months before the events year starts, so the answers decide which events to run.

  2. 02

    Follow up with mentors quickly

On every plan, a workflow adds each Yes on the mentor question to a Google Sheet or posts it to Slack, so the mentoring team can reach out while the offer is fresh.

  3. 03

    Add one open question

A last question such as What would bring you back to campus? gives Usertick written answers to read and sort by theme.

  4. 04

Add each new class to the list

Import each graduating class as a CSV before the yearly send. Bounces and spam complaints are suppressed automatically, so the list stays clean.
